The role of V–V processes in vibrationally excited CO systems in the longitudinal and transverse flow chemical lasers is studied. Initial vibrational energy distributions of CO formed by the O + CS reaction are deduced from chemiluminescent data using calculated values of the vibration energy exchange probabilities. The time evolution of the population distributions is then obtained by computer simulation. The results are compared with experimental measurements. The effects of excess oxygen and of "cold" CO on the population distributions are also discussed.

The role of adenosine in postcontraction hyperemia (PCH) following sustained, maximal isometric contractions was studied in free-flowing dog gracilis muscles. The hemodynamic responses to contraction were examined in the presence and absence of dipyridamole (an adenosine transport inhibitor), erythro-9-(2-hydroxy-3-nonyl)adenine (EHNA, an adenosine deaminase inhibitor), or alpha, beta-methyleneadenosine-5'-diphosphate (AOPCP, an inhibitor of 5'-nucleotidase). Each muscle was stimulated to contract for 1, 3, 5, and 10 s during saline and drug infusions. For each contraction, the tension-time integral (TT), excess flow (EQ), and excess oxygen consumption (EVo2) were computed. Linear regression analyses were then performed on EQ vs. TT, EVo2 vs. TT, and EQ vs. EVo2. An alteration of the PCH response by the drug was determined as any significant change from the saline control in the slope of the linear regression of EQ vs. EVo2. Dipyridamole and EHNA caused increases of 73 and 48%, respectively, in the slope of EQ vs. EVo2, whereas AOPCP decreased the slope by 41%. The changes in the PCH produced by these drugs are consistent with the hypothesis that an increase in interstitial adenosine during muscular contraction contributes to PCH.

This paper investigates the role and usage of metaphor in advertising texts from a psycho-linguistic, structural perspective. It adopts Al- Najjar (1984) structural classification of metaphor to go hand in hand with Frazier's (1987) perceptual theory of garden path of comprehension on the side of the advertisees. The analysis traces the impact of employing metaphorical texts in texting adverts. It discusses how, linguistically, unrelated words are connected together in terms of cognitive process (garden path). Indirect targeting of meaning by manipulating linguistic tools like structural options generates one of the most attractive factors for a text which is vagueness. Hovering around the exact wording of some meaning provides the advertiser enough space to insert multi-meanings, concepts, and ideas. As such, different unique impact can be made on the advertisees. The paper analyses some selected English advertising texts depending on an eclectic model made out of these two models. Finally, it ends with some conclusions which assure that relational metaphor is comprehended serially, while sentential metaphor is comprehended in a parallel garden path.

AbstractThe recognition of twinning and the determination of the twin laws are nowadays often entrusted to "black-box" software packages. This approach may be both risky and uneconomical. It is risky because never a procedure should be blindly applied. It is uneconomical if procrastinates the analysis of twinning at the very late stage of structure solution and refinement, whereas in many cases this analysis can and should be applied much earlier. In this paper we present a brief survey of the working strategies to be applied to the structural study of twinned crystals, emphasizing the role of the crystallographer, rather than that of the machine.
