During the past several years, a systematic search for novae in the Magellanic Clouds has been carried out at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. The Curtis Schmidt telescope, on loan to CTIO from the University of Michigan is used to obtain plates every two weeks during the observing season. An objective prism is used on the telescope. This provides additional low-dispersion spectroscopic information when a nova is discovered. The plates cover an area of 5°x5°. One plate is sufficient to cover the Small Magellanic Cloud and four are taken of the Large Magellanic Cloud with an overlap so that the central bar is included on each plate. The methods used in the search have been described by Graham and Araya (1971). In the CTIO survey, 8 novae have been discovered in the Large Cloud but none in the Small Cloud. The survey was not carried out in 1974 or 1976. During 1974, one nova was discovered in the Small Cloud by MacConnell and Sanduleak (1974).

Investigation of neat polymers by TEM is often thwarted by their sensitivity to the incident electron beam, which also limits the usefulness of chemical and spectroscopic information available by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) for these materials. However, parallel-detection EELS systems allow reduced radiation damage, due to their far greater efficiency, thereby promoting their use to obtain this information for polymers. This is evident in qualitative identification of beam sensitive components in polymer blends and detailed investigations of near-edge features of homopolymers.Spectra were obtained for a poly(bisphenol-A carbonate) (BPAC) blend containing poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) using a parallel-EELS and a serial-EELS (Gatan 666, 607) for comparison. A series of homopolymers was also examined using parallel-EELS on a JEOL 2000FX TEM employing a LaB6 filament at 100 kV. Pure homopolymers were obtained from Scientific Polymer Products. The PTFE sample was commercial grade. Polymers were microtomed on a Reichert-Jung Ultracut E and placed on holey carbon grids.

The supergiant H II region 30 Doradus is placed in context as the optically most spectacular component in a much larger region of recent and current star formation in the Large Magellanic Cloud, as shown by deep Hα photographs and the new IRAS results. The current state of knowledge concerning the concentrated central cluster in 30 Dor is summarized. Spectroscopic information exists for only 24 of the brightest members, most of which are WR stars; however, photometry shows over 100 probable members earlier than BO. The spectral classification of these stars is a difficult observational problem currently being addressed; in the meantime their hypothetical ionizing luminosity is calculated from the photometry and compared with that suggested for the superluminous central object R136a alone, and with the H II region luminosity. With reference to related regions in the Galaxy, the likelihood that many of the brightest objects in 30 Dor are multiple systems is emphasized. An interpretation of R136a as a system containing a few very massive stars (as opposed to a single supermassive object) is in good accord with the observations, including the visual micrometer results. The study of 30 Dor and its central cluster is vital for an understanding of the numerous apparently similar regions now being discovered in more distant galaxies.

Abstract In order to study the Milky Way, RR Lyrae (RRL) variable stars identified by Gaia, ASAS-SN, and ZTF sky survey projects have been analyzed as tracers in this work. Photometric and spectroscopic information of 3417 RRLs including proper motions, radial velocity, and metallcity are obtained from observational data of Gaia, LAMOST, GALAH, APOGEE, and RAVE. Precise distances of RRLs with typical uncertainties less than 3% are derived by using a recent comprehensive period–luminosity–metallicity relation. Our results from kinematical and chemical analysis provide important clues for the assembly history of the Milky Way, especially for the Gaia–Sausage ancient merger. The kinematical and chemical trends found in this work are consistent with those of recent simulations that indicated that the Gaia–Sausage merger had a dual origin in the Galactic thick disk and halo. As recent similar works have found, the halo RRL sample in this work contains a subset of radially biased orbits besides a more isotropic component. This higher orbital anisotropy component amounts to β ≃ 0.8, and it contributes between 42% and 83% of the halo RRLs at 4 < R( kpc) < 20.

The neutron-rich nuclei 136Sn and 132Cd have been studied in the purpose of nuclear structure for the nuclei beyond the doubly-magic nucleus 132Sn. The 2+1 → 0+ gs transitions were identified for these two nuclei using in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy in coincidence with one- and two-proton removal reactions, respectively, at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The 2+ 1 state in 136Sn is found to be similar to that for 134Sn indicating the seniority scheme may also hold for the heavy tin isotopes beyond N = 82. For 132Cd, the 2+ 1 state provides the first spectroscopic information in the even-even nuclei locating in the region “southeast” of 132Sn and the result is discussed in terms of proton-neutron configuration mixing. In both these two nuclei, it was found that the valence neutrons play an essential role in their low-lying excitations.
