The chapter proposes an integrated manufacturing system consisting of three main components: digital prototyping, physical prototyping, and lost core technology. The integrated system combines the beneficial aspects of computer-aided design, computer-aided engineering, rapid prototyping, and rapid tooling. The proposed integrated system is an attempt to compress the product development time while saving cost. The system can be efficient in designing of mold, parts with complex ducts and cavities, and carrying out design analysis through optimization and simulations. The system is therefore an attempt to minimize the waste of material that occurs in the development of a product and is therefore an efficient green technology for the manufacturing industries.

The aim of this work is to develop an integrated system for facilitating the process of designing the drawing dies and their component. The developed system is based on the integration between Computer Aided Process Planning in Sheet Metal Drawn parts “CAPP”, and the Computer Aided Design in Deep Drawing Die components “CAD”. Both modules are coded using Visual Basic program and joined with AutoCAD. The CAPP module made to report the drawing load and to plot the shape of the drawn shell in each stage of the Axis-Symmetric Deep Drawing process. Based on the reported shell geometry, the dimensions of the die components are calculated and transferred to the CAD module. The CAD module, which is based on many data bases (standard parts, sheet metal data), plots the required deep drawing die components for each drawn stage on the AutoCAD monitor. A demonstrated example is presented to validate the developed system and to show that the system results are acceptable.

Increasing emphasis is now being placed on the benefits of an integrated system with the basic information generated at the draughting stage being held on the computer and manipulated to produce cost estimates, drawings, production control information, machine control and certification of quality. The integration of these functions, together with the integration of component production, prototype manufacture and toolmaking, can result in reduction of both lead times and cost of production. The application of CAD/CAM within Delta is of general interest because Delta's companies (average size 300–400 employees) are in many ways typical of mechanical engineering companies and the specification of the computer aided design and manufacturing system which Delta has introduced, would be applicable to many small to medium sized engineering companies.
