Aim: To describe the case of rare benign lymphoproliferative disorder — pulmonary nodular lymphoid hyperplasia in the patient with previous pulmonary tuberculosis. Materials and Methods: In the case of pulmonary nodular lymphoid hyperplasia clinical, laboratory, instrumental and morphological examination was performed. Results: 44-year-old woman in 7 years after successfully treated infiltrative drug-susceptible tuberculosis of the right lung, was hospitalized with a suspected tumor of the left lung root. The patient underwent left-sided pneumonectomy with lymph nodes dissection. The results of histopathological and immunohistochemical studies evidenced on nodular lymphoid hyperplasia of the left lung. Conclusion: Pulmonary nodular lymphoid hyperplasia is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder of the lung with favorable prognosis. For the purpose of differential diagnosis, it is necessary to apply immunohistochemistry.

Aim. The aim of the study was to determine the presence of peculiarities of the age structure in patients with various surrogate molecular biological subtypes of breast cancer. Materials and research methods. This work analyzes the age-related characteristics of the occurrence of molecular biological subtypes in 499 patients with invasive breast cancer. All cases were divided into 5 molecular biological subtypes based on immunohistochemical studies of hormone receptors, Her2, Ki-67. The average age of the patients was 53.4±0.39 years, the predominant group was patients from 50 to 60 years (37.2% of the total). Research results. In patients under 40 years old, the triple negative subtype prevailed (44.8%). Luminal A subtype prevailed in the groups 51-60 years old (more than 41.4%) and over 60 years old (39.7%). Luminal B (Her2-) subtype was equally found in all age groups.

Primary angiosarcomas arising from the alimentary tract are rare and only a few cases have been reported in the literature. We report a case of an angiosarcoma of the sigmoid colon with intraperitoneal bleeding but not rectal bleeding. A 21-year-old female patient received a laparotomy and a mass lesion over the sigmoid colon was found with active bleeding. A sigmoid colectomy was performed as a curative resection. Grossly, the sigmoid colon contained a kidney shaped, hemorrhagic tumour from the submucosal layer extension to the antimesenteric side. Intraluminally, the mucosa of the colon was intact. Microscopic examination revealed a high grade angiosarcoma composed of fascicles of spindle cells and solid sheets of epithelioid cells. Immunohistochemical stains revealed a positive result for CD31 and the endothelial nature of the malignancy was confirmed. Smooth muscle antigens, desmins, cytokeratins AE1/AE3 and CD117 were all negative. The patient is still alive without evidence of recurrence or metastasis at a three-year follow-up appointment. Owing to the availability of immunohistochemical studies, some atypical sarcomas would now be correctly classified as angiosarcomas. Since no optimal adjuvant treatment is effective, curative surgical excision is still the best choice of treatment.

Canavan disease is an autosomal recessive leukodystrophy caused by mutations in the gene encoding aspartoacylase (ASPA), which hydrolyses N-acetylaspartate (NAA) to acetate and aspartate. A similar feline neurodegenerative disease associated with a mutation in the ASPA gene is reported herein. Comprehensive clinical, genetic, and pathological analyses were performed on 4 affected cats. Gait disturbance and head tremors initially appeared at 1 to 19 months of age. These cats eventually exhibited dysstasia and seizures and died at 7 to 53 months of age. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed diffuse symmetrical intensity change of the cerebral cortex, brainstem, and cerebellum. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis of urine showed significant excretion of NAA. Genetic analysis of the 4 affected cats identified a missense mutation (c.859G>C) in exon 6 of the ASPA gene, which was not detected in 4 neurologically intact cats examined as controls. Postmortem analysis revealed vacuolar changes predominantly distributed in the gray matter of the cerebrum and brain stem as well as in the cerebellar Purkinje cell layer. Immunohistochemically, these vacuoles were surrounded by neurofilaments and sometimes contained MBP- and Olig2-positive cells. Ultrastructurally, a large number of intracytoplasmic vacuoles containing mitochondria and electron-dense granules were detected in the cerebral cortex. All 4 cats were diagnosed as spongy encephalopathy with a mutation in the ASPA gene, a syndrome analogous to human Canavan disease. The histopathological findings suggest that feline ASPA deficiency induces intracytoplasmic edema in neurons and oligodendrocytes, resulting in spongy degeneration of the central nervous system.

A new short wavelength confocal blue-light 450 nm-fundus autofluorescence (color-FAF) allows for visualization of minor fluorophores (e.g., advanced glycation end products, AGEs), besides lipofuscin. The aim of the present pilot study was to quantitatively evaluate color-FAF in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and to correlate these data with different stages of retinal disease severity. Optical coherence tomography and color-FAF images of 193 patients/eyes and 18 controls were analyzed using a custom software for quantification of the long (red) and short (green) wavelength components of the emission spectrum (REFC/GEFC). Measurements were performed in nine quadrants of the 6-mm ETDRS macular grid. Foveal GEFC and REFC intensities were higher in patients with DM compared to controls (p = 0.015 and p = 0.006 respectively) and in eyes with center involving diabetic macular edema (DME) compared to eyes without DME (p < 0.001). A positive correlation was found between GEFC and REFC intensities and central retinal thickness, r = 0.37 (p < 0.001) and r = 0.42 (p < 0.001), respectively. No differences were found in color-FAF among different DR severity groups. Quantitative color-FAF could become helpful for the metabolic evaluation of retina in patients with DM and in DME; however, further histologic and immunohistochemical studies on distribution of different retinal fluorophores in DM are needed to better understand its role.
