The wear resistance of diffusion coatings in conditions of specific pressures of 3, 7 and 10 MPa was studied. The boride coatings were prepared by means of diffusion methods using C45 steel as the substrate material. Research on the microstructure and redistribution of chemical elements on wear surface of a borided layer was carried out. It was found that the boride coatings should be used under a specific pressure of 7 MPa. It was found that the wear of friction couple coating of steel C45 under specific pressure of 3 MPa proceeds according to the oxidation wear mechanism, while under specific pressures of 7 and 10 MPa the abrasive wear prevails. The wear-induced segregation of atoms in coatings was studied using secondary mass-spectroscopy method (SIMS). Increased C, O, and B concentrations were noticed at the wear surface on depth from 50 to 2000 Å. The secondary wear-induced structure formation on the wear surface resulted in high wear resistance of diffusion borided coatings.

The Relationship

The article discusses the formation of the structure of protective diffusion layers using composite saturating charges on structural materials with different carbon content. A thermodynamic analysis of the gas phase at saturation has been carried out. The composition of the gas phase has been determined. Gaseous products interact with elements of the powder system (Al, Mo, Cr) and are transformed into the gas phase (CrH, CrOH, CrСl, CrСl2, CrСl3, СrОН, СrОСl2, CrI, CrI2, CrI3, МоСl, МоСl2, МоСl3, МоСl4, МоОСl, МоОСl2, МоI, МоI2, МоI3, МоI4). Using 3D modeling of microstructures, it was possible to more fully establish the nature of the distribution of phases and inclusions in the diffusion layer. The relationship between the 3D microstructure of the material and its physical and mechanical properties made it possible to carry out modeling to obtain the optimal composition of the developed composite charge for saturation. Diffuse layers are formed on the surface of structural materials, which contain Mo2C and α phases - the Cr, Al, Mo phase, the inclusion of Fе7Мо6, (Fe, Сr, Al, Mo)23С6. Carbides of three types were found: hexagonal chromium carbide Сr7C3 and carbides Мо2С, Cr23C, Fe3Mo3C и Fe2Mo2C. The physical, mechanical and operational properties of structural materials with protective diffusion coatings have been investigated. At tests in the conditions of sliding friction the best wear resistance among the considered diffusion coverings has vanadium, titanium and borized. Their wear resistance is 1.8 - 2.3 times greater than that of coatings obtained under isothermal conditions.

Aluminum diffusion coatings were applied to the Inconel 617 by a pack cementation. The effect of coatings on the thermal stability and wear resistance of the Inconel alloy after heat-treatment under an air and a helium atmosphere at 1000°C, 48 h has been studied. The aluminide-coated Inconel specimens are prepared at 850°C and 1000°C for 1 h. An aluminiding layer indexed as AlxNi1-x(x = 0.4–0.6) was formed near the surface region and it played a role as a barrier layer against the surface diffusion of Cr . The thin Cr2O3film formed in situ on the alloy surface is protective inhibiting further oxidation at moderate temperatures. As the temperature increases further, the thermal stability of the Inconel alloy is limited by the instability of the Cr2O3scale. The aluminide-coated Inconel 617 samples showed the better performances, the enhanced thermal stability and improved wear resistance, most likely due to the barrier layer formation with the reduced amount of Cr2O3scale formation.

Ceramics, such as Al2O3 and SiC have numerous current and potential uses in applications where high temperature strength, hardness, and wear resistance are required often in corrosive environments. These materials are, however, highly anisotropic and brittle, so that their mechanical behavior is often unpredictable. The further development of these materials will require a better understanding of the basic mechanisms controlling deformation, wear, and fracture.The purpose of this talk is to describe applications of TEM to the study of the deformation, wear, and fracture of Al2O3. Similar studies are currently being conducted on SiC and the techniques involved should be applicable to a wide range of hard, brittle materials.

Research was performed on the friction, wear and efficiency of plastic gears made of modern engineering polymers and their composites both in a clean environment (adhesive sliding surfaces) and in an environment contaminated with solid particles and dust (abrasive), with no lubrication at all. The purpose is to give a general view about the results of abrasive wear tests including seven soil types as abrasive media. At the first stage of the research silicious sand was applied between the meshing gears and the wear of plastic and steel gears was evaluated and analyzed from the point of different material properties (elongation at break, hardness, yield stress, modulus of elasticity) and its combinations. The different correlations between the experienced wear and material features are also introduced. At the second stage of the project the abrasive sand was replaced with different physical soil types. The abrasive wear of gears is plotted in the function of soil types. The results highlight on the considerable role of physical soil types on abrasive wear resistance and the conclusions contain the detailed wear resistance. The results offer a new tribology database for the operation and maintenance of agricultural machines with the opportunity of a better material selection according to the dominant soil type. This can finally result longer lifetime and higher reliability of wearing plastic/steel parts.
