Abstract In a multistage serial production line, products with defect can be repaired or reworked to ensure high product quality. This paper studies a multistage serial manufacturing system with quality rework loops. Rework is the activity to repair or repeat the work on the defect parts during manufacturing processes, and it adds to cost and cycle time. This paper introduces an event-based data-enabled mathematical model for a stochastic production line with quality rework loops. The system performance properties are analyzed and permanent production loss due to quality rework loops is identified. The mathematical model and system performance identification methodology are studied analytically through numerical case studies.

The search for oil and gas has already extended to the Arctic areas of the world. To date conventional sand islands have been used for exploration drilling purposes in water depths of up to 43 ft. In deeper water exploration has only been possible using floating drilling equipment which can only operate during the short summer season of open water. This paper briefly outlines the geotechnical principles and development to date of hydrostatically supported sand islands. This construction technique, which utilizes hydrostatic water pressure to stabilize dredged sand at near vertical underwater slopes, would allow sand islands to be quickly and economically built in water depths of up to 200 ft. The hydrostatically supported sand island is a gravity structure and, therefore, is only suitable for use on competent seabed soils. This paper presents two different designs which are currently proposed for use as drilling structures in such areas as the Beaufort Sea. One design is intended for use as a movable exploration structure and the second for a permanent production island that would remain on location for 30 to 50 yr. The near vertical side slopes of the hydrostatically supported sand islands reduce the amount of sand required to manageable amounts, and allow the construction on location to be safely completed during the short Arctic summers. The sand provides sufficient mass to resist ice pressures.

Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp as an Example of Biopolitical Framework of Global War on Terror The aim of this article is to introduce the problem of indefinite detainees of Guantanamo Bay into the framework of biopolitical interpretation of Global War on Terror (GWOT). From the very first days of GWOT, the George W. Bush administration mobilized all available resources to fight with everyone suspected as a potential terrorist in all areas, including legal area. The intentional consequence of this fight was the elimination of political rights for indefinite detainees. Potentially risky individuals were suspected in the context of normal law – what can be perceived as a visible result of sovereign’s decisions and actions – and were transformed into bare lives, figure of homini sacri. Homo sacer means an individual being excluded from the society and social order; it means the situation of being deprived of personal political rights, where the essence of human existence is diminished to physical aspects exclusively. According to Giorgio Agamben and his concept of biopolitics, the camp per se, is the paradigm of modernity. It is the place of permanent production of bare lives, the materialized place of state of exception, the place of law suspension. In the context of post-9/11, Guantanamo detention camp became the pure exemplification of Agamben’s biopolitical camp.

Tensioners are used for supporting various kinds of production and drilling risers on offshore platforms. All permanent production facilities (such as TLP’s and Spar’s) have employed tensioners to support their dry tree production risers. The key design parameters for the tensioners design are stiffness, stroke and friction properties. Full scale onshore testing of production riser tensioners to determine tensioner properties is difficult due to the magnitude of the loads and pressures required for typical deepwater risers, thus designers frequently rely on theoretical values or small scale tests. This paper presents a determination of riser tensioner properties from full scale offshore observations made on the Holstein Spar production facility during 2005 hurricance season. The paper presents a model for the tensioner system that relates the properties needed by platform and riser designers to the physical tensioner systems. The methodology and results from extraction of parameters from the full scale data is presented. The results presented in this paper will provide a better insight to the designers of such systems.

This article investigates the impact of casualization on the labour market of organized manufacturing industries in India. In specific, this article analyses the impact of casualization on the labour demand and output elasticity of 15 manufacturing industries in the post-liberalization period for the direct production workers. Dynamic panel data analysis of system generalized methods of moment method is used here for the estimation of lagged labour demand for permanent production workers. Aggregate level analysis ensures that casualization has a significant positive impact on the labour demand and on output elasticity. Disaggregate level analysis also confirms the significant positive impact on the output elasticity at individual industry level. However, wage share of the workers falls along with the increase in the usage of contract workers across most of the industries. Output elasticity increases but at the cost of falling wage share. Casualization generates more job opportunity but reduces the wage share for the permanent production workers in post-liberalization period. JEL Codes: J20, J21, J30, J46, C23

Abstract Disruption events such as machine random failures significantly impact the throughput of the line. Maintenance actions could restore the machines to certain health levels. A real-time scheduling of corrective maintenance (CM) is critical to improve the machines’ performance, hence to improve overall system productivity and quality. Due to the limited quantity of technicians or robots in manufacturing system, when, where and assign what type of maintenance is a complicated decision to make. A proper strategy to assign CM can greatly reduce permanent production lost, resource and energy consumption. In this paper, an online task allocation (OTA) method is provided to solve the assignment of CM for a stochastics serial production line. Case study is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of OTA method in assigning CM.
