Wide spread in the values of the elasticity modulus of the titanium VT6 alloy and its analogs Ti—6Al—4V, Ti—6Al—4V ELI at room temperature and at elevated temperatures is revealed аs result of the literature sources analysis. The data are ambiguous, the available temperature dependences of the elasticity modulus have very different values starting from the temperature T l 500 °C. Mathematical modeling of the warping process is carried out on the example of figurine-shaped stamped blank of turbine blade using various dependences of the elasticity modulus on temperature. Cases of warping during cooling of stamped blank after cooling-down in stamp with and without cumulative deformation are considered. The difference in the course of thermal deformations during the cooling of the workpiece is obtained using different temperature dependences of the elasticity modulus. The presence of preliminary deformation increases the warping of the workpieces.

Ti–6Al–2Sn–4Zr–2Mo (Ti-6242), a near-[Formula: see text] titanium alloy explicitly designed for high-temperature applications, consists of a martensitic structure after selective laser melting (SLM). However, martensite is thermally unstable and thus adverse to the long-term service at high temperatures. Hence, understanding martensite decomposition is a high priority for seeking post-heat treatment for SLMed Ti-6242. Besides, compared to the room-temperature titanium alloys like Ti–6Al–4V, aging treatment is indispensable to high-temperature near-[Formula: see text] titanium alloys so that their microstructures and mechanical properties are pre-stabilized before working at elevated temperatures. Therefore, the aging response of the material is another concern of this study. To elaborate the two concerns, SLMed Ti-6242 was first isothermally annealed at 650[Formula: see text]C and then water-quenched to room temperature, followed by standard aging at 595[Formula: see text]C. The microstructure analysis revealed a temperature-dependent martensite decomposition, which proceeded sluggishly at [Formula: see text]C despite a long duration but rapidly transformed into lamellar [Formula: see text] above the martensite transition zone (770[Formula: see text]C). As heating to [Formula: see text]C), it produced a coarse microstructure containing new martensites formed in water quenching. The subsequent mechanical testing indicated that SLM-built Ti-6242 is excellent in terms of both room- and high-temperature tensile properties, with around 1400 MPa (UTS)[Formula: see text]5% elongation and 1150 MPa (UTS)[Formula: see text]10% elongation, respectively. However, the combination of water quenching and aging embrittled the as-built material severely.

This paper presents comparative studies on the performance of two titanium alloys (Ti- 6Al-1Mn, Ti-45.9Al-8Nb) in an oxidizing atmosphere at 700 oC and 800 oC. Testing procedure comprised thermogravimetric measurements at a constant temperature and in thermal cycling conditions (1-h and 20-h cycles at constant temperature followed by rapid cooling). The overall duration of the cyclic oxidation tests was up to 1000 hours. The oxidized specimens were analyzed in terms of chemical composition, phase composition, and morphology (SEM/EDS, TEM/EDS, XRD). The extent and forms of alloy degradation were evaluated on the basis of microscopic observation of specimen fractures and cross-sections. Selected specimens were examined by means of XPS, SIMS and GDS. Oxidation mechanism of Ti-46Al-8Nb was assessed a two-stage oxidation method using oxygen-18 and oxygen-16. Apparently, the oxidation of this alloy proceeded in several stages. According to XPS, already after quite short reaction time, the specimens were covered with a very thin oxide film, mainly composed of aluminum oxide (corundum). A thicker layer of titanium dioxide (rutile) developed underneath. These two layers were typical of the oxidation products formed on this alloy, even when tested in thermal cycling conditions. In general, the scale had a complex multilayer structure but it was thin and adherent. Under the continuous layer of titania, there was a fine-grained zone composed of mixed oxides. The alloy/scale interface was marked with niobium-rich precipitates embedded in a titanium-rich matrix. There were some indications of secondary processes occurring under the initial continuous oxide layers (e.g. characteristic layout of pores or voids). Thickness of inner scale layers clearly increased according to parabolic kinetics, while that of the outer compact layer (mainly TiO2) changed only slightly. The distribution of oxygen isotopes across the scale/alloy interface indicated two-way diffusion of the reacting species – oxygen inward and metals outward diffusion. Silicon deposited on Ti-6Al-1Mn alloy positively affected scale adhesion and remarkably reduced alloy degradation rate.

Since writing on this subject two years ago [1], a number of developments have occurred, particularly in relation to the mechanical properties of the L12 nickel aluminide Ni3Al. Some elucidate the nature of the yield strength and the extraordinarily beneficial effect of boron on low-temperature ductility. Some others expose, at least in part, the nature of the marked reduction in ductility at elevated temperatures. Another considers the mechanisms dominating creep deformation. Also during this period, contradictions have appeared: the relationship between the yield strength and the grain size, d, at room temperature has been contested, and opposing views of grain refinement on ductility have been reported.This paper reviews these developments. Although broadly directed at intermetallic compounds, the discussion is specific to Ni3Al. The hope is that the knowledge and understanding gained about this compound will benefit the class as a whole.

Grades 23 and 29 titanium alloys are becoming more commonly used offshore for critical components of riser systems. Many of these components, such as compact flanges, operate at high mean strains due to make-up loads, often close to or above yield. Hitherto, weld fatigue data collected at low mean strains have been used for prediction of fatigue lives of such components. However, these analyses have resulted in short but adequate lives. The objective of this work was, therefore, to derive fatigue data that could be applied to components operating at high strains and over a large range of stress ratios. This necessitated strain-controlled fatigue testing. Cyclic material properties evaluated from the tests are presented. In addition, it was found that sustained strain load, a type of stress relaxation that, unlike normal stress relaxation, does not require elevated temperatures, affected the cyclic behavior It also affects the distribution of make up stresses. This phenomenon was also investigated and it was shown that the cyclic stress/strain curve, readily derived from strain-controlled fatigue tests, accounted for sustained strain load effects.

With increasing speeds of aircraft, problems arise over materials of construction, partly through kinetic heating effects which cause temperature rises and partly through rain erosion effects. Additionally, account has to be taken of a required life of 30,000 hours which is much longer than that over which most materials are normally evaluated.For speeds of Mach 2.2, the maximum temperature attained will be of the order of 130°C, while for Mach 2.7 the corresponding temperature will be 200°C or higher. For the lower speed, it is probable that aluminium alloys will be satisfactory, although it must be emphasised that no information is yet available on the long-term behaviour of materials at the elevated temperatures likely to be experienced. Test programmes are in hand, but these will necessarily take considerable time for their completion. For speeds of Mach 2.7 or above, steel or titanium alloys will be required, but here again the necessary evaluation for long periods at high temperature has yet to be completed.

Titanium and its alloys have seen increased utilization in military and aerospace applications due to combination of high specific strength, toughness, corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature performance and compatibility with polymer composite materials. Titanium alloys are difficult to machine due to their inherent low thermal conductivity and higher chemical reactivity with other materials at elevated temperatures. In general, temperature related machining difficulties are encountered at production speeds in the range of 60 m/min and high-speed machining of these alloys has created considerable interest to researchers, tool manufacturers and end users. This paper provides recent results obtained during turning operation with the aim of improving machinability of titanium alloys. Several tests have been conducted using (i) micro-edge prep geometry of the inserts, (ii) ultra-hard PVD coated, and (iii) nano-layered coated inserts and the effects of speeds and feeds during turning of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy are discussed. The initial tests have been conducted under orthogonal (2-D) cutting conditions with no coolant application. Based on these results, several oblique cutting (3-D) tests have been designed and conducted to study the effect of various types of ultra-hard and nano-layered coatings at higher cutting speeds under flooded coolant conditions. The effects of speed and feed on cutting force and tool wear are presented in this paper.

ATI 425® Alloy, nominal composition Ti-4.0Al-2.5V-1.5Fe-0.25O, is a new alpha/beta Ti alloy of significant commercial interest as a viable replacement for Ti-6Al-4V, CP-Ti, and other titanium alloys in a variety of aerospace applications. ATI 425® Alloy offers properties comparable to Ti-6Al-4V alloy with significant improvements in formability, both at room and elevated temperatures. The reasons for the improved formability, particularly at low temperatures, are not well understood. The development of a thorough understanding is complicated by the wide array of phases, microstructures, and deformation paths available via thermomechanical processing in alpha/beta titanium alloys. In this paper, theories of strengthening and dislocation mobility in titanium and HCP metals will be reviewed and applied to better understand why ATI 425® Alloy offers a unique combination of strength and formability not obtainable by conventional alpha/beta titanium alloys. Subsequently, the application of the improved formability to a range of product forms including sheet, tubing, and forgings will be discussed.
