Nowadays, we all rely on cyberspace for our information needs. We make use of different types of search tools. Some of them have specialization in a specific format or two, while few can crawl a good portion of the web irrespective of formats. Therefore, it is very imperative for information professionals to have thorough understandings of these tools. As such, the chapter is an endeavor to delve deep and highlight various trends in online information retrieval from primitive to modern ones. The chapter also made an effort to envisage the future requirements and expectation keeping in view the ever-increasing dependence on diverse species of information retrieval tools.

O artigo apresenta o conceito de regime de informação aos gestores de informação, como contribuição aos processos de adaptação e adequação de sistemas de informação e linguagens documentárias para atender às necessidades informacionais dos usuários. Regimes de informação são modos de produção informacional dominantes numa formação econômico-social que pressupõem, necessariamente, em seu contexto fontes de informação que são disseminadas e exercem influência no contexto social em que estão estabelecidas. Nesse aspecto, as sociedades têm regimes de informação através dos quais organizam a produção material e simbólica e representam a dinâmica das relações sociais. Dentre as diversas formas de manifestações institucionais atuais, destacam-se os sistemas de recuperação da informação, a manifestação per se do fenômeno que move o regime. Os sistemas de recuperação da informação, por sua vez, usam linguagens documentárias para organizar e comunicar a informação organizada nos inúmeros “agregados de informação”, que Barreto (1996) define como “estruturas” que armazenam “estoques de informação” e podem atuar como “agentes”, ou “mediadores”, entre uma fonte de informação e seus usuários. Abstract The article presents the concept of regime of information to information managers as a contribution for the proccesses of adaptation and adjustment of information systems and documentary language to really attend the information needs of users. Regimes of information are dominants modules of informational production in economic-social formation that presuppose, necessarily, in its context information sources wich are disseminated and put in actions influences in the structure which they are established. Under these circumstances, societies have regimes of information through whom organize symbolic and material production and represent the social dynamics relations. In the midst of several kinds of actual institutional manifestations, distinguish the information retrieval systems, the expression per se of the phenomenon that moves the regime. Under this configuration, the information retrieval systems make use of documentary language to organize, describe and communicate provided information in innumerable aggregates of information that, according Barreto (1996), “are structures which harvest “supply of information” and they operate as “agents” or “mediators” between a source of information and their users”.

This paper reviews the concept and goal of Information Retrieval Systems (IRSs). It also explains the synonymous concepts in Information Retrieval (IR)which include such terms as: imprecision, vagueness, uncertainty, and inconsistency. Current trends in IRSs are discussed. Fuzzy Set Theory, Fuzzy Retrieval Modelsare reviewed. The paper also discusses extensions of Fuzzy Boolean Retrieval Models including Fuzzy techniques for documents’ indexingandFlexible query languages. Fuzzy associative mechanisms were identified to include:(1)fuzzy pseudothesauri and fuzzy ontologies which can be used to contextualize the search by expanding the set of index terms of documents;(2)an alternative use of fuzzy pseudothesarui and fuzzy ontologies is to expand the query with related terms by taking into account their varying importance of an additional termand (3)fuzzy clustering techniques, where each document can be placed within several clusters with a given strength of belonging to each cluster, can be used to expand the set of the documents retrieved in response to a query.The paper concludesby recommending that in an electronic library environment, the librarians and information scientists should acquaint themselves with these terms in order to be more equipped in helping library users retrieve online documents relevant to their information needs.

The main goal of the information retrieval systems is to present only the relevant and useful information to the user. The information retrieval systems articulate proper searching mechanism through indexing and abstracting to attain this goal. This study aims to study the search mechanisms usage habits among the Ophthalmologists – Eye Doctors. A survey method is used to obtain the opinion from ophthalmologists’ on their usage of search mechanisms. 633 ophthalmologists working in 47 academic eye hospitals from 16 states of India were included in the study. This particular study is a part of the main study “Information Needs and Seeking Behaviour of Ophthalmologists in Academic Eye Hospitals in India”. The multi response question about the search mechanisms usage among ophthalmologists was analysed by finding out the popular search mechanism and then identifying the pattern of the search mechanism usage. The statistical relationship between the search mechanism usage and ophthalmologists & institution characteristics were examined with the help of t-test and ANOVA. The study results reveals that “By Title” was the most popular searching mechanism among ophthalmologists. It was used by 77.4% of the ophthalmologists. Majority of the ophthalmologists use more than one search mechanism which is about 82.15% and 17.85% of the ophthalmologists use one search mechanism. The study results show up that searching mechanism usage differs with gender. This reveals the relationship between search mechanism usages among ophthalmologists which will help to the library and information providers to improve their indexing and abstracting services in right manner.

People use search engines to find information they desire with the aim that their information needs will be met. Information retrieval (IR) is a field that is concerned primarily with the searching and retrieving of information in the documents and also searching the search engine, online databases, and Internet. Genetic algorithms (GAs) are robust, efficient, and optimizated methods in a wide area of search problems motivated by Darwin’s principles of natural selection and survival of the fittest. This paper describes information retrieval systems (IRS) components. This paper looks at how GAs can be applied in the field of IR and specifically the relevance of genetic algorithms to internet web search. Finally, from the proposals surveyed it turns out that GA is applied to diverse problem fields of internet web search.

An experiment is described which attempts to derive quantitative indicators regarding the potential relevance predictability of the intermediate stimuli used to represent documents in information retrieval systems. In effect, since the decision to peruse an entire document is often predicated upon the examination of one »level of processing« of the document (e.g., the citation and/or abstract), it became interesting to analyze the properties of what constitutes »relevance«. However, prior to such an analysis, an even more elementary step had to be made, namely, to determine what portions of a document should be examined.An evaluation of the ability of intermediate response products (IRPs), functioning as cues to the information content of full documents, to predict the relevance determination that would be subsequently made on these documents by motivated users of information retrieval systems, was made under controlled experimental conditions. The hypothesis that there might be other intermediate response products (selected extracts from the document, i.e., first paragraph, last paragraph, and the combination of first and last paragraph), that would be as representative of the full document as the traditional IRPs (citation and abstract) was tested systematically. The results showed that:1. there is no significant difference among the several IRP treatment groups on the number of cue evaluations of relevancy which match the subsequent user relevancy decision on the document;2. first and last paragraph combinations have consistently predicted relevancy to a higher degree than the other IRPs;3. abstracts were undistinguished as predictors; and4. the apparent high predictability rating for citations was not substantive.Some of these results are quite different than would be expected from previous work with unmotivated subjects.
