This paper presents 927 MHz flux densities for the SNRs Cassiopeia A and TaurusA relative to those for the radio galaxies Cygnus A and Virgo A and for the Orion Nebula. The measurements were made in October-December 1977 with the 10 m radiotelescope at the Staraya Pustyn' (NIRFI) RadioastronomicaI Observatory. Comparison between these data and the absolute flux density measurements of Razin and Fedorov (1963) yields an annual decrease in flux density of 095%004% for CasA and 018%001% for TauA (142%06% and 27% 01% respectively over the past 15 years).

The first trial of equipment designed for 400 Mc./s. absolute flux density measurement was completed just prior to this symposium. Using the midday sun, the gain of a 7·5 metre Würzburg (equipped with a TE°11 circular wave-guide feed) was found by comparison with an ‘optimum’ pyramidal horn of 20·2 square wave-lengths aperture. Cable losses and signal powers were measured against the available noise power from two co-axial resistors, one at ambient temperature and the other stabilized at the boiling-point of pure nitrogen.

The brightness distribution across the Cassiopeia A source in position angle 90 degrees consists of a primary region of emission 4.1 minutes of arc in width, with a much fainter extension offset from the main region of emission and having a brightness of only 10 per cent of that of the main component. Measurements were made up to the third maximum of the transform (2160 λ), and the position of the first zero was determined at 840 λ.
