A novel Chern–Simons E8 gauge theory of gravity in D = 15 based on an octicE8 invariant expression in D = 16 (recently constructed by Cederwall and Palmkvist) is developed. A grand unification model of gravity with the other forces is very plausible within the framework of a supersymmetric extension (to incorporate spacetime fermions) of this Chern–Simons E8 gauge theory. We review the construction showing why the ordinary 11D Chern–Simons gravity theory (based on the Anti de Sitter group) can be embedded into a Clifford-algebra valued gauge theory and that an E8 Yang–Mills field theory is a small sector of a Clifford (16) algebra gauge theory. An E8 gauge bundle formulation was instrumental in understanding the topological part of the 11-dim M-theory partition function. The nature of this 11-dim E8 gauge theory remains unknown. We hope that the Chern–Simons E8 gauge theory of gravity in D = 15 advanced in this work may shed some light into solving this problem after a dimensional reduction.

After adding auxiliary fields and integrating out the original variables, the Yang-Mills action can be expressed in terms of local gauge-invariant variables. This method reproduces the known solution of the two-dimensional SU (N) theory. In more than two dimensions the action splits into a topological part and a part proportional to αs. We demonstrate the procedure for SU (2) in three dimensions where we reproduce a gravitylike theory. We discuss the four-dimensional case as well. We use a cubic expression in the fields as a space-time metric to obtain a covariant Lagrangian. We also show how the four-dimensional SU (2) theory can be expressed in terms of a local action with six degrees of freedom only.

Abstract We study the holographic entanglement entropy of deformed entangling regions in three-dimensional CFTs dual to Einstein-AdS gravity, using a renormalization scheme based on the addition of extrinsic counterterms. In this prescription, when even- dimensional manifolds are considered, the universal contribution to the entanglement entropy is identified as the renormalized volume of the Ryu-Takayanagi hypersurface, which is written as the sum of a topological and a curvature term. It is shown that the change in the renormalized entanglement entropy due to the deformation of the entangling surface is encoded purely in the curvature contribution. In turn, as the topological part is given by the Euler characteristic of the Ryu-Takayanagi surface, it remains shape independent. Exploiting the covariant character of the extrinsic counterterms, we apply the renormalization scheme for the case of deformed entangling regions in AdS4/CFT3, recovering the results found in the literature. Finally, we provide a derivation of the relation between renormalized entanglement entropy and Willmore energy. The presence of a lower bound of the latter makes manifest the relation between the AdS curvature of the Ryu-Takayanagi surface and the strong subadditivity property.
