Sugar beet pulp (SBP) was used as low value adsorbent for the removal of calcium from hard water. Batch experiments were conducted to determine the factors affecting adsorption of the process such as pH value and Ca concentration. The adsorption equilibrium of Ca2+ by the SBP is reached after 100min and a pseudo second-order kinetic model can describe the adsorption process. The initial concentrations of Ca varied from 927 to 1127mgCa2+/L. A dose of 30g/L sugar beet pulp was sufficient for the optimum removal of calcium. The overall uptake of Ca ions by sugar beet pulp has its maximum at pH=8. The adsorption equilibrium data fitted well with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm equation.

Steamed Hoof Powder (SHP), size < 53μ, was observed to have high adsorption capacity for Hg(II) with >95% removal from a solution containing 100 mg/L of Hg(II) with only 0.1% (W/V) concentration of SHP. The SHP has good settling properties and gives clear and odour free effluent. Studies indicate that pH values between 2 and 10 have no effect on the adsorption of Hg(II) on SHP. Light metal ions like Na+, K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ up to concentrations of 500 mg/L and heavy metals like Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Co2+, Pb2+, Ni2+, Mn2+, Cr3+, Cr6+, Fe2+ and Fe3+ up to concentrations of 100 mg/L do not interfere with the adsorption process. Anions like sulphate, acetate and phosphate up to concentrations of 200 mg/L do not interfere. Chloride interferes in the adsorption process when Hg(II) concentration is above 9.7 mg/L. The adsorption equilibrium was established within two hours. Studies indicate that adsorption occurs on the surface sites of the adsorbent.

Development of indusrialization and urbanization not only increase economic growth but also contribute to the environmental degradation, especially contamination of heavy metals in water. In other side, there are many geological materials have capability to immobilize heavy metals. Therefore, the objective of this research is to know the maximum capacity of natural zeolite from Trembono area, Gunung Kidul regency to immobilize copper (Cu2+) from water and to understand their mechanism. This experiment was carry out by a batch test. The result showed that the maximum capacity of zeolite to immobilize Cu (qmax) is 63,69 mmolCu/kg Zeolite according to Langmuir adsorption equilibrium model. In addition, the capability to immobilize Cu will increases due to decreasing the grain size. The result of this research can be used as an alternative for waste water treatment, especially Cu. Various kinetic pathways to the adsorption equilibrium in an isothermal differential bed of adsorbent are illustrated on several examples. Discussion is based on the computed transient responses of adsorption rate and distance from adsorption equilibrium to the start of adsorptive feed. It is shown that adsorption behaviour in flow system may not be smooth and very steep changes on the rate responses may appear. Even the simple reaction need not approach equilibrium smoothly but at a jump. The approach assuming "closeness to the equilibrium" should be used very carefully, in this case.

The ability to remove toxic heavy metals, such as Pb(II), from the environment is an important objective from both human-health and ecological perspectives. Herein, we describe the fabrication of a novel carboxymethylcellulose-coated metal organic material (MOF-5–CMC) adsorbent that removed lead ions from aqueous solutions. The adsorption material was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We studied the functions of the contact time, pH, the original concentration of the Pb(II) solution, and adsorption temperature on adsorption capacity. MOF-5–CMC beads exhibit good adsorption performance; the maximum adsorption capacity obtained from the Langmuir isotherm-model is 322.58 mg/g, and the adsorption equilibrium was reached in 120 min at a concentration of 300 mg/L. The adsorption kinetics is well described by pseudo-second-order kinetics, and the adsorption equilibrium data are well fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model (R2 = 0.988). Thermodynamics experiments indicate that the adsorption process is both spontaneous and endothermic. In addition, the adsorbent is reusable. We conclude that MOF-5–CMC is a good adsorbent that can be used to remove Pb(II) from aqueous solutions.

Supercritical CO2 regeneration is one of the possibilities for spent carbon regeneration loaded with some organics. Here, adsorption equilibrium and adsorption dynamics were evaluated for some typical organic pollutants under some supercritical CO2 conditions. A supercritical CO2 chromatograph packed with activated carbon (F-400, CAL) was used to detect the pulse responses of organics, which were analyzed by moment analysis. Adsorption equilibrium constants of some organics varied with CO2 density and their boiling points. Possibility of regeneration of each substance was discussed. Cost estimation was necessary and was the key point of this technique.
