We studied the effect ofthe magnetoelastic ansitropy on properties of nanostructured glass-coated microwires with soft magnetic behaviour (Finemet-type microwires of Fe70.8Cu1Nb3.1Si14.5B10.6, Fe71.8Cu1Nb3.1Si15B9.1 and Fe73.8Cu1Nb3.1Si13B9.1 compositions) and with granular structure (Cu based Co-Cu microwires). The magnetoelastic energy originated from the difference in thermal expansion coefficients of the glass and metallic alloy during the microwires fabrication, affected the hysteresis loops, coercivity and heat capacity of Finemet-type microwires. Hysteresis loops of all as-prepared microwires showed rectangular shape, typical for Fe-rich microwires. As expected, coercivity, HC, of as-prepared microwires increases with decreasing of the ratio ρ defined as the ratio between the metallic nucleus diameter, d to total microwire diameter, D. On the other hand we observed change of heat capacity in microwires with different ratio ρ. In the case of Co-Cu microwires ρ- ratio affected the structure and the giant magneto-resistance of obtained microwires.

AbstractMultilayer films consists of noble metal (Pd, Pt, Cu, Au, PdSi) and transition metal(Co, Ni, PdCo, PtCo, CoZr) layers were prepared by rf sputtering method on glass and/or MgO single crystal substrates. The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy was examined in relation to the magnetostriction, lattice misfits, crystallinity and crystal orientations. The results suggest that the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in noble metal/PdCo alloy multilayers originates from the magnetoelastic energy of the PdCo layers under a stress due to the lattice misfits. In both Pd/Co and Pd/Ni multilayers, the anisotropy was found to depend on the crystal orientation, and the dependence is discussed from the view point of the magnetoelastic surface anisotropy.

ABSTRACTThe effect of in-plane strain in (111)-oriented epitaxial TbFe2 films on the magnetization orientations was studied. Magnetocrystalline anisotropy, shape anisotropy, and magnetoelastic energy were calculated to determine the magnetization orientation in the presence of various in-plane strains. Theoretical considerations indicate that a compressive strain smaller than -0.065% can induce an out-of-plane magnetization. DC magnetron sputtering from Tb and Fe elemental targets was used to grow 50, 100, 200, and 400 Å thick epitaxial TbFe2(111) films at 600°C on (110)-oriented sapphire substrates with 1000 Å thick epitaxial Mo(110) buffer layers. The growth rate of the TbFe2(111) films was 1.44 Å/sec. X-ray diffractometry, Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, and vibrating sample magnetometry were used to characterize the crystal structure, epitaxial orientation, composition, stress and strain state, and magnetic properties of the TbFe2 films. The TbFe2(111) films were epitaxial with twins rotated by 60° and were in tensile strain states with the resulting in-plane magnetization.

ABSTRACTThe structure and properties of sputter NiFe thin film deposited on both thermal oxide and thin tantalum nitride have been studied. The magnetic anisotropy field HK increases to 8.2 Oe when the NiFe film was deposited on a thin tantalum nitride underlayer. Anisotropic stress was found on the sample film with tantalum nitride underlayer. Results of X-ray diffraction show that a thin tantalum nitride underlayer appears to promote a preferred crystalline orientation formation of the NiFe film. The induced magnetic anisotropy is attributed to the formation of the preferred crystalline orientation and the induced anisotropic magnetoelastic energy which is associated with the anisotropic stress of the sample film.

Abstract The quasi-static strain (QSS) is the product induced by the lattice thermal expansion after ultrafast photo-excitation. Although the QSS and thermal effects are barely distinguishable in time, they should be treated separately because of their different fundamental actions to ultrafast spin dynamics. By employing ultrafast Sagnac interferometry and the magneto-optical Kerr effect, we demonstrate quantitatively the existence of QSS and the decoupling of two effects counteracting each other in typical polycrystalline Co and Ni films. The Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert and Kittel equations considering a magnetoelastic energy term showed that QSS, rather than the thermal energy, in ferromagnets plays a governing role in ultrafast spin dynamics. This demonstration provides an essential way to analyze ultrafast photo-induced phenomena.
