Cast Ni-Si-B alloys have the potential for high-temperature applications because of their high resistance to wear, impact, corrosion, and oxidation at elevated temperatures due to an appropriate balance of hard phases and austenite that ensures a good compromise between toughness and hardness. In this work, NiSi3B2 specimens, fabricated by the lost-wax casting process, were investigated. Given the complex multiphase cast microstructure, a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC-TGA) analysis was employed to characterize the reactions that occur during solidification and the resulting phases were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), with energy-dispersive microanalysis (EDS) and backscattered electron (BSE) image and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Due to the presence of hard phases, machining of the Ni-Si-B components can pose additional difficulties. Therefore, the conditions of the solution heat treatment, which might lead to the homogenization of the microstructure, consequently improving its machinability, were also investigated. The results of the heat-treated samples indicated that the dissolution of the eutectic constituent is accompanied by a significant decrease in the hardness (approximately 17%). It is important to emphasize that the solution heat treatments carried out reduced the hardness without affecting the percentage of borides, which will allow improving the machinability without adversely affecting the alloy performance in service.

The technology of structure refinement in materials with the aim of achieving substantial mechanical properties and maintaining the required plasticity level is becoming increasingly useful in industrial practice. Magnesium alloys are very progressive materials for utilization in practice thanks to their high strength-to-weight ratios (tensile strength/density). The presented paper analyses the effect of the input heat treatment of the AZ31 alloy on the change of structure and strength properties through the process of severe plastic deformation (SPD), which finds an increasing utilization, especially in the automotive and aviation industry. For the study of the influence of the SPD process (ECAP method) on the properties of the AZ31 alloy, two types of thermal treatment of the initial state of the structure were selected. The analysis of the structure of the AZ31 alloy was performed in the initial state without heat treatment and subsequently after heat treatment. In the next part, the influence of the number of passes on the strengthening curves was evaluated. Mechanical properties of the AZ31 alloy after ECAP were evaluated by hardness measurement and completed by structure analysis.

A study of the features of structural-phase state, thermal stability, mechanical properties characteristics and fracture features of V-Cr-Ta-Zr alloy after chemical-heat treatment by the method of nonequilibrium internal oxidation has been carried out. It has been established that, in contrast to chemical-heat treatment in a defect state, the effect of oxygen when introduced into a material with a stabilized structure is observed only at high concentrations. At such oxygen concentrations, which ensure the maximum binding of Zr into particles based on ZrO2, the alloy under study demonstrates a high level of thermal stability and strength properties. These effects are associated with the implementation of disperse strengthening according to the Orowan mechanism by nanosized ZrO2 particles characterized by high thermal stability. The concentration and nature of the distribution of oxygen predetermine the spatial distribution of nanosized ZrO2 particles formed during chemical-heat treatment, which manifests itself in fracture features of the material at different temperatures.

A study of ADC12 (Al-Si aluminium alloy) composite is conducted to obtain a more sustainable material with enhanced properties for automotive industry purpose, such as train's brake shoe and bearing application. For those kind of utilization, material with durability, good elastic modulus, thermal stability, wear resistance, and high strength properties is needed due to its exposure to high temperature and heavy continuous application. ADC 12 acts as the matrix, reinforced with 3 vf% micro-SiC with 5 wt% Mg wetting agent was fabricated by the stir casting method. The addition of 0.18 wt% Sr and 0.15 wt% TiB were expected to finer the grain morphology of the silicone eutectic phase and to acts as the grain refiner, respectively. Furthermore, T6 heat treatment was applied with aging temperature 150 °C, 170 °C, 190 °C, 210 °C, and 230 °C, following the prior 1 h 490 °C solution treatment. The results obtained in this work showed enhancement in tensile strength with the value of 213 MPa, hardness value 75 HRB, and wear resistance. These values increase up to 115 MPa for the UTS and 38 HRB for the hardness value, as the impact of the refined grains from both modifiers and heat treatment.

This work deals with the quality of birch (Betula pendula) wood from different sites and the impact of heat treatment on it. Two degrees of heat treatment were used, 170 °C and 190 °C. The resulting property values were compared with reference to untreated wood samples. These values were wood density, compressive strength, modulus of elasticity (MOE), bending strength (MOR), impact bending strength (toughness), hardness, swelling, limit of hygroscopicity, moisture content and color change. It was supposed that an increase in heat-treatment temperature could reduce strength properties and, adversely, lead to better shape and dimensional stability, which was confirmed by experiments. It was also shown that the properties of the wood before treatment affected their condition after heat treatment, and that the characteristic values and variability of birch properties from 4 sites, 8 stems totally, were reflected in the properties of the heat-treated wood. Values of static MOR were the exception, where the quality of the input wood was less significant at a higher temperature, and this was even more significant in impact bending strength, where it manifested at a lower temperature degree. Impact bending strength also proved to be significantly negatively affected by heat treatment, about 48% at 170 °C, and up to 67% at 190 °C. On the contrary, the most positive results were the MOE and hardness increases at 170 °C by about 30% and about 21%, respectively, with a decrease in swelling at 190 °C by about 31%. On the basis of color change and other ascertained properties, there is a possibility that, after suitable heat treatment, birch could replace other woods (e.g., beech) for certain specific purposes, particularly in the furniture industry.
