Catalyzed Reactions

Rhodium- catalysed reactions of o- or p- cyano-N-allylanilines with H2/CO give N- arylpyrrolidine aldehydes resulting from a double hydroformylation sequence. In contrast reactions of o- or p-methyl-N-allylanilines or N- allylaniline itself with H2/CO give ' dimeric ' compounds resulting from self-condensation reactions of an initially formed hydroformylation product together with varying amounts of the double hydroformylation product. Similar reactions of o-cyano-N-but-3-enylanilines give low yields of double hydroformylation products and major products arising from hydrogenation or cross coupling of intermediate enamines. The structure of one of these products, N-2-cyanophenyl-5-(N′-2-cyanophenyl-3-methyl-pyrrolidin-2-yl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyridine (17) (IUPAC name: 2-[5-{1-(2-cyanophenyl)-3-methylpyrrolidin-2-yl}-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyridin-1-yl] benzonitrile ) was confirmed by an X-ray single-crystal structure determination.

A new mixed lead thorium phosphate, Pb0.5Th2(PO4)3, has been isolated in the system PbO–ThO2–P2O5. Its crystal structure (monoclinic symmetry, a=17.459(1) Å, b=6.8451(4) Å, c=8.1438(5) Å, β=101.247(5)°, space group C2/c) has been determined from conventional monochromatic X-ray powder diffraction data. The structure is related to the MITh2(PO4)3 structure type. Lead atoms are located in the channels parallel to the c axis, out of the twofold axis for 0.97 Å, and are statistically distributed on a quarter of crystallographic positions. The thermal stability of this material is greater than that of the monazite-type compound PbTh(PO4)2.

Oxydation of (dpp-BIAN)Ca(THF)4 with 0.5 equiv. of I2 in THF yields [(dpp-BIAN)CaI(THF)2]2 (1). A corresponding neodymium compound [(dpp-BIAN)NdCl(THF)2]2 (2) has been obtained by reaction of (dpp-BIAN)Na2 with NdCl3 in THF. The X-ray single crystal structure analyses show 1 and 2 to be isostructural dimers containing octahedrally coordinated metal atoms bridged by the respective halides. The chelating dpp-BIAN ligand acts as a radical anion in the Ca2+ complex 1 and as a dianion in the Nd3+ complex 2, respectively.
