In this form of electron microscopy, photoelectrons emitted from a metal by ultraviolet radiation are accelerated and imaged onto a fluorescent screen by conventional electron optics. image contrast is determined by spatial variations in the intensity of the photoemission. The dominant source of contrast is due to changes in the photoelectric work function, between surfaces of different crystalline orientation, or different chemical composition. Topographical variations produce a relatively weak contrast due to shadowing and edge effects.Since the photoelectrons originate from the surface layers (e.g. ∼5-10 nm for metals), photoelectron microscopy is surface sensitive. Thus to see the microstructure of a metal the thin layer (∼3 nm) of surface oxide must be removed, either by ion bombardment or by thermal decomposition in the vacuum of the microscope.

Abstract At temperatures in the region of 140°, organic polysulfides undergo disproportionation resulting from thermal fission of S—S bonds and recombination of the fission products. In the presence of olefins a considerable proportion of the fission products become attached to ethylenic centers of the olefin, forming mixed mono- and polysulfides. The major part of the monosulfide product is fully saturated, hydrogen capture occurring during, or subsequent to the formation of adducts from the olefin and sulfurated fragments; unsaturation, however, appears in the polysulfide portion. The polysulfides are capable of producing monothio cross-links between the original olefinic molecules only in so far as they are able to yield up elementary sulfur to the olefin, and when the original olefin is a polyisoprene, the tendency towards the formation of a high proportion of intramolecular cyclic sulfide still further reduces the opportunity for formation of intermolecular sulfur-cross-linked products.

The influence of fertilization with brown coal (used as preparation called Rekulter) on properties of humic acids extracted from haplic luvisol was studied. Characteristics of humic acids were identified by their elemental composition, thermal decomposition, and infrared and UV-VIS spectra. It was found that humic acids formed during decomposition process of Rekulter in soil were characterised by a higher content of carbon (38.6% versus 35.4%), a lower content of nitrogen (1.50% versus 2.73%) and a higher resistance to thermal decomposition, when compared with humic acids extracted from soils without Rekulter application. Due to special properties of Rekulter, additional liming did not affect the properties of humic acids.

The chemical composition of fresh flowers from Allium ursinum (ramsons, bear's garlic, wild garlic) growing in Bulgaria has been studied. Thymidine (1), adenosine (2), astragalin (kaempferol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (3), kaempferol-3-O-D-glucopyranosyl-7-O-D-glucopyranoside (4), kaempferol-3-O-D-neohesperoside (5), and kaempferol-3-O-D-neohesperoside-7-O-D-glucopyranoside (6) were isolated from the n-butanol extract and identified by different spectroscopic and spectrometric methods. Thymine (7), uridine (8), uracil (9) and 5-chloro-uridine (10) were detected in the same extract by GC-MS. This is the first report of the occurrence of 1, 2, 4, 7 – 10 in the flowers of A. ursinum. GC-MS of the volatile components of fresh flowers and leaves from the same plant revealed a high content of sulfur compounds, some of which are reported for the first time for A. ursinum. The antimicrobial activities of extracts from fresh flowers and leaves of A. ursinum have been tested; some extracts exhibited moderate antifungal properties.

The synthesis routes are presented for the preparation of nanocomposites composed of nanocrystals placed inside SBA-15 silica pores. The procedures assume treating the silica channels as nanoreactors, where nanocrystals are created as a result of thermal decomposition of internal functional units. Its sizes and chemical composition can be modified by the change of functional group types and density inside silica channels. The procedure is demonstrated by the example of copper pyrophosphate quantum dots and silver oxide nanoparticles inside silica mezochannels. The method can be easily adopted to other types of nanocrystals that can be synthesized inside silica nanoreactors.
