ABSTRACTEffects of ternary additions on the deformation behavior of single crystals of MoSi2 with the hard [001] and soft [0 15 1] orientations have been investigated in compression and compression creep. The alloying elements studied include V, Cr, Nb and Al that form a C40 disilicide with Si and W and Re that form a C11b disilicide with Si. The addition of Al is found to decrease the yield strength of MoSi2 at all temperatures while the additions of V, Cr and Nb are found to decrease the yield strength at low temperatures and to increase the yield strength at high temperatures. In contrast, the additions of W and Re are found to increase the yield strength at all temperatures. The creep strain rate for the [001] orientation is significantly lower than that for the [0 15 1] orientation. The creep strain rate for both orientations is significantly improved by alloying with ternary elements such as Re and Nb.

The mechanical responses of Ti-5Al-2.5Sn alloy at low temperatures were investigated under quasi-static and dynamic tensile loads using MTS system and SHTB system, respectively. Tensile stress-strain curves were obtained over the temperature range of 153 to 298K and the rate range of 0.001 to 1050 s-1. Experimental results indicate that the tensile behavior of Ti-5Al-2.5Sn alloy is dependent on strain rate and temperature. Yield stress and flow stress increase with increasing strain rate and decrease with increasing temperature. Results also indicate that strain hardening rate of Ti-5Al-2.5Sn alloy is lower at high strain rate, while strain hardening rate varies little with testing temperature. The Khan-Huang-Liang constitutive model was chosen to characterize the tensile responses of Ti-5Al-2.5Sn alloy at low temperatures and different strain rates. The model results coincide well with the experimental results within the tested temperature and rate ranges.

The mechanical properties of pure iron single crystals and of polycrystalline specimens of a zone-refined iron have been measured in compression over the temperature and strain rate ranges 2.2 to 293 °K and 7 x 10 -7 to 7 x 10 -3 s -1 respectively. Various yield stress parameters were determined as functions of both temperature and strain rate, and the reversible changes in flow stress produced by isothermal changes of strain rate or by changes of temperature at constant strain rate were also measured as functions of temperature, strain and strain rate. Both the temperature variation of the flow stress and the strain rate sensitivity of the flow stress were generally identical for the single crystals ( ca. 0.005/M carbon) and the polycrystalline specimens ( ca. 9/M carbon). At low temperatures, the temperature dependence of the yield stress was smaller than that of the flow stress at high strains, probably because of the effects of mechanical twinning, but once again the behaviour of single and polycrystalline specimens was very similar. Below 10 °K, both the flow stress and the extrapolated yield stress were independent of temperature. The results show that macroscopic yielding and flow at low temperatures are both governed by the same deformation mechanism, which is not very impurity sensitive, even in the very low carbon range covered by the experiments. The flow stress near 0 °K is ca. 5.8 x 10 -3 u where [i is the shear modulus. On the basis of a model for thermally activated flow, the activation volume at low temperatures (high stresses) is found to be ca. 5 b 3 . The exponent in the empirical power law for the dislocation velocity against stress relation is ca. 3 near room temperature, but becomes quite large at low temperatures. The results indicate that macroscopic deformation at low temperatures is governed by some kind of lattice frictional stress (Peierls-Nabarro force) acting on dislocations.

Background – In spite of a number of researchers, it is well known that mechanical behaviour of a spinal cord under loading has not yet been studied extensively enough. Methods - Specimens were loaded at various strain rates: 0.02/s and 0.002/s to 5% and 10% strain. After reaching defined strain value, samples were left at a constant strain for stress relaxation. Findings – The demonstrated tensile testing stress-strain response is a highly non-linear curve corresponding to low stiffness. In the toe region stress increases exponentially with the applied strain. The highest calculated stress value for 10% strain was 0,014 MPa (strain rate 0,02/s) and 0,008 MPa (strain rate 0,002/s). Linear approximation of the stress by the least square method allowed to derive Young modulus of the value: 39,68 kPa at strain rate 0,02/s and 31,07 kPa at strain rate 0,002/s. R squared value for both regressions was above 0,99 and confirmed a good quality of approximation. A and β coefficients were 1,5MPa and 31,3 at 0,02/s strain rates and 1,3MPa and 25,3 at 0,002/s strain rates correspondingly. Relative stress relaxation increased from 20% to 37% after 60 s. Absolute stress relaxation was from 0,4kPa to 2,4kPa, at 0,002/s strain rate by 5% maximum strain and 0,02/s strain rate by 10% respectively. Interpretation - Mechanical characteristics demonstrated a visible strain-rate dependence as stiffness was significantly increasing with an increase of strain rate. Combination method of strain-rate cycling tests and application of ultrasonic oscillations was conducted for KCl:Sr2+ (0.035, 0.050, 0.065 mol.% in the melt) single crystals at low temperatures. The measurement of strain-rate sensitivity (λ) of flow stress under the application of ultrasonic oscillatory stress provides useful information on the interaction between a mobile dislocation and impurities (Sr2+ ions) during plastic deformation and the variation of λ with stress decrement (Δτ) due to oscillation has stair-like shape: The first plateau place ranges below the first bending point (τp1) at low stress decrement and the second one extends from the second bending point (τp2) at high stress decrement. The value of λ decreases with the Δτ between the two bending points. The τp1 is considered to represent the effective stress due to impurities when a dislocation begins to break-away from the impurities with the help of thermal activation during plastic deformation. Annealing the impure crystal by heat treatment, τp1 decreases obviously at low temperature and the critical temperature Tc, at which τp1 is zero, also becomes slightly smaller. Furthermore, it was investigated whether a change in the state of a small amount of impurities has an influential factor of the flow parameters (e.g., the activation energy, the density of forest dislocations) from the data analyzed in terms of Δτ vs. λ curve.
