We have recorded a laser excitation spectrum of the A3Π–X3Σ− electronic band system of the CNN radical in the gas phase, at a resolution of ca. 0.8 cm−1. The rotational branch structure of the vibrational band near 419 nm has been simulated and molecular parameters are obtained. The results are compared with data from laser-induced-fluorescence spectra of CNN trapped in a low-temperature matrix. A revised value for the spin-orbit parameter in the A3Π state is obtained and comparison is made with the values for related molecules. The possible detection of CNN in astrophysical sources is considered and the general features of its rotational spectrum in the ground electronic state are described.

The conformational and photochemical behaviour of a 2-(1H-tetrazol-1-yl)thiophene was studied using low-temperature matrix isolation infrared spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. FVP of 2-(1H-tetrazol-1-yl)thiophene afforded new thieno-fused heterocycles.

The flash vacuum pyrolysis of Diels–Alder adducts of anthracene constitutes a rapid and selective route to methanethial 1 and methanethial S-oxide 2, as analyzed in the gas phase by photoelectron spectroscopy. Low temperature infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H, 13C) spectra are also reported for sulfine 2.

Vinyl ketene (1,3-butadiene-1-one) has been synthesized by vacuum pyrolysis of 3-butenoic 2-butenoic anhydride. The microwave and infrared spectra of vinyl ketene in the gas phase at room temperature have been studied. The trans-rotamer has been identified, and the spectroscopic constants were found to be Ã= 39571(48) MHz, B̃ = 2392.9252(28) MHz, C̃ = 2256.0089(28) MHz, ⊿j = 0.414(31) kHz, and ⊿JK = - 34.694(92) kHz. The electrical dipole moment was found to be 0.987(23) D with μa = 0.865(14) D and μb = 0.475(41) D. A tentative assignment has been made for 17 of the 21 normal modes of vibration
