The combined effect of cyclic and static loads on the mechanical properties of the soft clay was experimentally investigated by conducting undrained cyclic triaxial tests on Shanghai clay. The results show that an increment in either static or cyclic load increases excess pore pressures and axial strains. For a given value of combined cyclic and static loads, the mechanical properties of the soft clay are more sensitive to the cyclic load. Furthermore, the accumulated excess pore pressure and axial strain for a larger cyclic stress ratio and a lower combined stress ratio might overcome that for a lower cyclic stress ratio and a higher combined stress ratio. The mechanical properties of the soft clay after the cyclic load was unloaded were also discussed. It was observed that the excess pore pressure and axial strain under the static load alone decrease gradually with time. The trend of them largely depends on the ratio of cyclic load to static load.

Abstract This article describes the laboratory tests necessary to identify the mechanical properties of the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-coated fabrics named Precontraint 1202S and Precontraint 1302S. First, a short survey of the literature concerning the description of coated woven fabrics is presented. Second, the material parameters for PVDF-coated fabrics are specified on the basis of biaxial tensile tests. A comparison of the 1:1 biaxial and the uniaxial tensile tests results is also given. Additionally, biaxial cyclic tests were performed to observe the change of immediate mechanical properties under cyclic load. The article is aimed as an introduction to a comprehensive investigation of the mechanical properties of coated fabrics.

Solid tires made of natural rubber, manufactured and used for forklift trucks in Thailand, have quality problems involving blow out [. Failure of solid tires may occur from excessive loads and or heat generation inducing loss of mechanical properties. The failure of solid tires relating to heat generation is considered. Solid tires under severe conditions, such as overloading, high speed, or high temperature work places often leading to fail and blowout. When these are continuously rolled and loaded, the rubber is stressed and deformed leading to heat generation [. The hysteresis loss storage in form of strain energy due to internal friction in the rubber converts to the heat source transfer to the section of tire. During carrying heavy load, solid tire is subjected to the repeat compressed cyclic loading. Since rubber has the visco-hyperelastic property, cyclic load deformation causes hysteresis loop when tire is performed under cyclic load. Hysteresis loops area indicates the amount of energy turn into heat and it is difficult transferring to the surface of the tire due to insulation itself. As the results, there is heat build-up as shown in term of temperature rising differs in each tire and finally causes blowout or explosion.

When a hot-mix asphalt (HMA) ages, its mechanical properties, resistance, and durability change. Several studies have been conducted throughout the world to evaluate the effects of aging in HMAs. However, few studies have analyzed the influence of gradation. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of gradation on the mechanical properties of aged HMA mixes. For such purposes, three HMA mixes with different gradations were manufactured (named HMA-10, HMA-19, and HMA-25), which were conditioned in STOA (short-term oven aging) and LTOA (long-term oven aging) by following the guidelines established by the AASHTO R30 specification. Marshall, Indirect Tensile Strength (ITS), resilient modulus, permanent deformation, fatigue (under controlled-stress condition), and Cantabro tests were performed. These tests were carried out to evaluate resistance under monotonic and cyclic load as well as the resistance to moisture damage and abrasion. The best performing mix in the test was HMA-19. There is no clear trend about the influence of gradation over the susceptibility of mixes for aging. This susceptibility changes depending on the test performed and the property measured. Furthermore, in resilient modulus tests, it is observed that the influence of gradation on aging susceptibility changes depending on the test temperature.

The Impact

Work objective is to solve the urgent problem of increasing the tightness and reliability of pressure couplings during their operation under dynamic loads. Theoretical and experimental studies assessing the impact on the tightness due to roughness nature of mating surfaces and three types of coatings: soft, double-layer and hard have been undertaken. The joints were tested under the influence of axial cyclic load and torque on a bench for accelerated testing. It is established that tightness of pressure couplings during operation under dynamic loads significantly depends on the parameters of microgeometry and physical and mechanical properties of the mating surface material that determine their actual contact area. Recommendations for preparing the surfaces of parts before pressure coupling assembling have been developed. It is proved that the use of regular microrelief and soft galvanic coatings of mating surfaces have a significant effect on the tightness of pressure couplings.

Bending cyclic fatigue tests of 2D laminated C/C composites were conducted under load control at a sinusoidal frequency of 10 Hz. And three-point bending tests of fatigued specimens with various cycles were conducted at room temperature to evaluate the effects of cyclic load on mechanical properties. 2D C/C specimens were prepared by an isothermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. The mechanical properties of composites were improved after cyclic loading at most the flexural strength by about 46% and the modulus 38%. The results show that the flexural properties of C/C composites were enhanced with the increase in fatigue cycles. It is suggested that the weakened interface between matrix and fibers by cyclic load play important roles in enhancing the property of C/C composites.

Whitening is defined as the change in the opacity of a polymeric material due to microvoid nucleation and/or grow, resulting in volume increase and possible modification of the mechanical properties. Its formation may arise from processing conditions or mechanical stresses acting in the polymers. The understanding of the whitening phenomenon and its effect on mechanical behavior is of great importance for engineering application; for instance, poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is widely used as pressure barrier in flexible raisers, where high pressure and aggressive media are presents and the presence of whitening may increase the gas permeation rate. The present study, cyclic loading experiments were performed on PVDF to generate whitening in a controlled manner. Subsequently, the whitening effect on the mechanical properties were evaluated using tensile tests and the structure was evaluated using X-ray diffraction, while the fracture surface was analyzed via scanning electron microscopy. It was observed that cyclic load was able to nucleated the voids and there was an increase in the crystallinity and in the mechanical properties of the material.
