Progress in microscopy such as STM and TEM-TED has revealed surface structures in atomic dimension. REM has been used for the observation of surface dynamical process and surface morphology. Recently developed reflection electron holography, which employes REM optics to measure the phase shift of reflected electron, has been proved to be effective for the observation of surface morphology in high vertical resolution ≃ 0.01 Å.The key to the high sensitivity of the method is best shown by comparing the phase shift generation by surface topography with that in transmission mode. Difference in refractive index between vacuum and material Vo/2E≃10-4 owes the phase shift in transmission mode as shownn Fig. 1( a). While geometrical path difference is created in reflection mode( Fig. 1(b) ), which is measured interferometrically using high energy electron beam of wavelength ≃0.01 Å. Together with the phase amplification technique , the vertivcal resolution is expected to be ≤0.01 Å in an ideal case.

By frequency-band extracting, we experimentally and theoretically investigate time-delay signature (TDS) suppression and entropy growth enhancement of a chaotic optical-feedback semiconductor laser under different injection currents and feedback strengths. The TDS and entropy growth are quantified by the peak value of autocorrelation function and the difference of permutation entropy at the feedback delay time. At the optimal extracting bandwidth, the measured TDS is suppressed up to 96% compared to the original chaos, and the entropy growth is higher than the noise-dominated threshold, indicating that the dynamical process is noisy. The effects of extracting bandwidth and radio frequencies on the TDS and entropy growth are also clarified experimentally and theoretically. The experimental results are in good agreements with the theoretical results. The skewness of the laser intensity distribution is effectively improved to 0.001 with the optimal extracting bandwidth. This technique provides a promising tool to extract randomness and prepare desired entropy sources for chaotic secure communication and random number generation.

Allostery represents a fundamental mechanism of biological regulation that is mediated via long-range communication between distant protein sites. Although little is known about the underlying dynamical process, recent time-resolved infrared spectroscopy experiments on a photoswitchable PDZ domain (PDZ2S) have indicated that the allosteric transition occurs on multiple timescales. Here, using extensive nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, a time-dependent picture of the allosteric communication in PDZ2S is developed. The simulations reveal that allostery amounts to the propagation of structural and dynamical changes that are genuinely nonlinear and can occur in a nonlocal fashion. A dynamic network model is constructed that illustrates the hierarchy and exceeding structural heterogeneity of the process. In compelling agreement with experiment, three physically distinct phases of the time evolution are identified, describing elastic response (≲0.1 ns), inelastic reorganization (∼100 ns), and structural relaxation (≳1μs). Issues such as the similarity to downhill folding as well as the interpretation of allosteric pathways are discussed.

Abstract. We calculate the azimuthal magnetic fields expected to be present in Saturn’s magnetosphere associated with two physical effects, and compare them with the fields observed during the flybys of the two Voyager spacecraft. The first effect is associated with the magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling currents which result from the sub-corotation of the magnetospheric plasma. This is calculated from empirical models of the plasma flow and magnetic field based on Voyager data, with the effective Pedersen conductivity of Saturn’s ionosphere being treated as an essentially free parameter. This mechanism results in a ‘lagging’ field configuration at all local times. The second effect is due to the day-night asymmetric confinement of the magnetosphere by the solar wind (i.e. the magnetopause and tail current system), which we have estimated empirically by scaling a model of the Earth’s magnetosphere to Saturn. This effect produces ‘leading’ fields in the dusk magnetosphere, and ‘lagging’ fields at dawn. Our results show that the azimuthal fields observed in the inner regions can be reasonably well accounted for by plasma sub-corotation, given a value of the effective ionospheric Pedersen conductivity of ~ 1–2 mho. This statement applies to field lines mapping to the equator within ~ 8 RS (1 RS is taken to be 60 330 km) of the planet on the dayside inbound passes, where the plasma distribution is dominated by a thin equatorial heavy-ion plasma sheet, and to field lines mapping to the equator within ~ 15 RS on the dawn side outbound passes. The contributions of the magnetopause-tail currents are estimated to be much smaller than the observed fields in these regions. If, however, we assume that the azimuthal fields observed in these regions are not due to sub-corotation but to some other process, then the above effective conductivities define an upper limit, such that values above ~ 2 mho can definitely be ruled out. Outside of this inner region the spacecraft observed both ‘lagging’ and ‘leading’ fields in the post-noon dayside magnetosphere during the inbound passes, with ‘leading’ fields being observed both adjacent to the magnetopause and in the ring current region, and ‘lagging’ fields being observed between. The observed ‘lagging’ fields are consistent in magnitude with the sub-corotation effect with an effective ionospheric conductivity of ~ 1–2 mho, while the ‘leading’ fields are considerably larger than those estimated for the magnetopause-tail currents, and appear to be indicative of the presence of another dynamical process. No ‘leading’ fields were observed outside the inner region on the dawn side outbound passes, with the azimuthal fields first falling below those expected for sub-corotation, before increasing, to exceed these values at radial distances beyond ~ 15–20 RS , where the effect of the magnetopause-tail currents becomes significant. As a by-product, our investigation also indicates that modification and scaling of terrestrial magnetic field models may represent a useful approach to modelling the three-dimensional magnetic field at Saturn.Key words. A visual study was conducted to investigate the evaporation and nucleate boiling of a water droplet on heated copper, aluminum, or stainless surfaces with temperature ranging from 50°C to 112°C. Using a high-speed video imaging system, the dynamical process of the evaporation of a droplet was recoded to measure the transient variation of its diameter, height, and contact angle. When the contact temperature was lower than the saturation temperature, the evaporation was in film evaporation regime, and the evaporation could be divided into two stages. When the surface temperature was higher than the saturation temperature, the nucleate boiling was observed. The dynamical behavior of nucleation, bubble dynamics droplet were detail observed and discussed. The linear relationships of the average heat flux vs. temperature of the heated surfaces were found to hold for both the film evaporation regime and nucleate boiling regime. The different slopes indicated their heat transfer mechanism was distinct, the heat flux decreased in the nucleate boiling regime more rapidly than in the film evaporation due to the strong interaction between the bubbles.

Abstract Potential vorticity (PV) thinking conceptually connects the upper-level (upper troposphere in the extratropics and middle troposphere for the tropics) dynamical process to the lower-level process. Here, the initiation mechanism of the boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation (BSISO) in the tropics is investigated using PV thinking. The authors demonstrate that the midtropospheric PV anomaly produces a dynamical environment favorable for the BSISO initiation. Under seasonal easterly vertical wind shear, the PV anomaly enhances low-level convergence and upward motion at its western edge. Tropical PV forcing in the middle troposphere produces balanced mass and circulation fields that spread horizontally and vertically so that its effect can reach even the lowest troposphere. The downward influence of the midtropospheric PV forcing is one of the key aspects of the PV thinking. Direct piecewise PV inversions confirm that the anomalous lower-level zonal wind and its convergence necessary for the initiation of BSISO convection do not arise solely from the response to the lower-level PV forcing but from the summed contribution by PV forcing at all levels. About 50% of the low-level circulation variations result from PV forcing from 700 to 450 hPa, with the largest contribution from the 600–650-hPa PV anomalies for the convection initiation region over the western Indian Ocean. The current study is compared with and incorporated into the thermodynamic recharge process and the frictional moisture flux convergence mechanism for the BSISO initiation. This study is the first qualitative application of the PV thinking approach that reveals the BSISO dynamics.
