In 1946, Howard Hughes nearly killed himself testing a new aircraft over Beverly Hills, and he spent weeks in the hospital before convalescing at Grant’s home. In 1947, when Hughes had recovered, he and Grant went on a cross country flight and their plane fell out of radio contact, leading the press to report that they were missing and presumed dead. On his return to Hollywood, Grant was unhappy making The Bishop’s Wife (1947), and he wanted to trade roles with his co-star David Niven, but producer Samuel Goldwyn refused his requests. While Grant hoped to make films in Britain with Alexander Korda, the plans eventually fizzled out. Nevertheless, he enjoyed a trip to London and Bristol, where he visited his mother again. On the voyage home, he met his future wife, the young actress Betsy Drake. The comedy Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948), was made at a time when the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) was investigating communist subversion in Hollywood. Grant’s co-stars, Myrna Loy and Melvyn Douglas, were committed to resisting the investigation and promoting First Amendment rights. Grant, however, was reluctant to take a stand, believing that actors had no place making political pronouncements. It was only when Charlie Chaplin was attacked a few years later that Grant finally spoke out against the investigations.

An informal discussion on the operation of light aircraft took place at a meeting of the Technical Committee of the Institute in London on 21 April 1976. A personal view expressed by Mr. F. S. Stringer and comments by Mr. C. Powell and Professor A. N. Black are printed below.Recent technical press disclosures have highlighted C.A.A. concern that the London Air Traffic Zone is being entered by unauthorized light aircraft, the infringements varying from minor boundary incursions to major crossings of the area. The pilots involved vary in experience, and in most if not all cases have been flying under VFR rules and out of radio contact with Air Traffic Control. It seems very probable that these pilots are lost, or at least very unsure of their position; the topographical relation of charts to places on the ground is becoming increasingly difficult to interpret due to the complexity of built-up areas, especially around the T.M.A.s. Not all aircraft carry VOR or ADF and the map and DR are the main navigational aids; some pilots are reluctant to call for radar assistance for a variety of reasons.

This paper reports aspects of a long-term study (1975-84) of the ecology, social organisation and behaviour of dingoes, Canis familiaris dingo, on the lower Fortescue River in Western Australia. In all, 170 dingoes were fitted with radio-collars and tracked from aircraft. Dingoes were sighted during 59% of the 13 618 occasions that they were being radio-tracked during the day. Radio-tracking yielded 31 229 daytime and 3016 night-time locations of radio-collared dingoes. The average duration of radio contact with 146 dingoes was 9 months (range 1-35 months). Dingoes were most active around sunrise and sunset, moderately active during the night, and least active during the heat of the day. Travelling (local meandering and more purposeful movement) was the most commonly witnessed activity. Levels of scent-marking (raised-leg urination and ground-scratching), howling and general activity increased over the 2-3 months prior to the mating period, suggesting that dingoes may have a long pro-oestrus (1-2 months). Whelping took place from mid-May to mid-August (mean date 18 July). The characteristics of natal dens are described. The pattern of activities associated with pup-rearing, including alloparental behaviour, closely followed that of related canids.

This research is motivated by development of radio broadcasting using streaming concept to broadcast to the listeners. Before streaming broadcast radio it need planting perception, resulting satisfaction to listeners. Problem and research objectives is to what extent the relationship between the audience’s perception of streaming radio and streaming radio contact with the extent of audience satisfaction. This research based on the theory of use and gratification and using the quantitative methodology, with quota sampling technique, respondents of PT. MNC Sky Vision Jakarta. The research result shown that there is a relation between the perception of streaming radio and there is a real relationship between the satisfaction of streaming radio.

The World's Fair of 1939 has the distinction of being the first of its kind to be heralded around the world by men from the air. The flight of Howard Hughes and his men will long be remembered by millions of Americans who followed his progress hour by hour around the globe. The speed of the trip startled the whole nation. The constant radio contact between the plane and the rest of the world was especially remarkable. The flight followed a prearranged schedule with such precision that the distance traveled was only twenty miles greater than the planned mileage.

The ICRC's shortwave telecommunications network — one of the most extensive non-governmental networks in the world — provides headquarters in Geneva and the delegations and sub-delegations in the field with an efficient and reliable means of communication. Entirely independent of commercial channels, the network enables radio contact to be maintained round-the-clock in situations where, more often than not, official channels have been disrupted or no longer function.
