Poly(3,4-ethylenedi-oxythiophene) (PEDOT) derivatives conducting polymers are known for their great electrochromic (EC) properties offering a reversible blue switch under an applied voltage. Characterizations of symmetrical EC devices, built on combinations of PEDOT thin films, deposited with a bar coater from commercial inks, and separated by a lithium-based ionic membrane, show highest performance for 800 nm thickness. Tuning of the color is further achieved by mixing the PEDOT film with oxides. Taking, in particular, the example of optically inactive iron oxide Fe2O3, a dark blue to reddish switch, of which intensity depends on the oxide content, is reported. Careful evaluation of the chromaticity parameters L*, a*, and b*, with oxidizing/reducing potentials, evidences a possible monitoring of the bluish tint.

Bulk nanostructured perovskites of La0.67-xLi3xTiO3 (LLTO) were prepared by using thermally ball-grinding from compounds of La2O3, Li2CO3 and TiO2. From XRD analysis, it was found that LTTO materials were crystallized with nano-size grains of an average size of 30 nm. The bulk ionic conductivity was found strongly dependent on the Li+ composition, the samples with x = 0.11 (corresponding to a La0.56Li0.33TiO3 compound) have the best ionic conductivity, which is ca. 3.2 x 10-3 S/cm at room temperature. The LLTO amorphous films were made by electron beam deposition. At room temperature the smooth films have ionic conductivity of 3.5 x 10-5  S/cm and transmittance of 80%. The optical bandgap of the films was found to be of 2.3 eV. The results have shown that the perovskite La0.56Li0.33TiO3  thin films can be used for a transparent solid electrolyte in ionic battery and in all-solid-state electrochromic devices, in particular.

Recent developments in the synthesis of transition metal oxides in the form of porous thin films have opened up opportunities in the construction of electrochromic devices with enhanced properties. In this paper, synthesis, characterization and electrochromic applications of porous WO3thin films with different nanocrystalline phases, such as hexagonal, monoclinic, and orthorhombic, are presented. Asymmetric electrochromic devices have been constructed based on these porous WO3thin films. XRD measurements of the intercalation/deintercalation of Li+into/from the WO3layer of the device as a function of applied coloration/bleaching voltages show systematic changes in the lattice parameters associated with structural phase transitions in LixWO3. Micro-Raman studies show systematic crystalline phase changes in the spectra of WO3layers during Li+ion intercalation and deintercalation, which agree with the XRD data. These devices exhibit interesting optical modulation (up to ~70%) due to intercalation/deintercalation of Li ions into/from the WO3layer of the devices as a function of applied coloration/bleaching voltages. The obtained optical modulation of the electrochromic devices indicates that, they are suitable for applications in electrochromic smart windows.

AbstractWe report here on thin films proton-working electrochromic devices based on the wellknown tungsten oxide as the coloring electrode, and Antimony Tin Oxide (ATO) as the ionstorage counter-electrode. We show that films deposited by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) technique have an apparent Sb solubility up to 70 at %, and exhibit unusual electrochromic properties. Through potentiostatic tests we'll demonstrate that depending on the composition which influences film morphology, the Sn-Sb-O films could either present a faradic or a capacitive-like behavior, associated to a color or a neutral switching over a wide range of potentials, respectively. The structural properties of ATO films are characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Electrochromic behavior is studied by means of cyclic voltamperometry coupled with ex situ optical transmittance measurements in the visible range. The maximum proton-storage capacity is observed for ATO films containing 40–50 at % Sb, while being quasi-neutral when switching over a wide range of potentials. These compositions are finally retained for the assembly of our WO3/proton-electrolyte/ATO devices, whose performances are reported.
