AbstractThe number of lines of arrested growth (LAGs) in diaphyseal cross-sections of phalanges or femora was used to assess individual age and growth of 612 Nanorana parkeri, including 363 males, 143 females, 70 juveniles, and 36 tadpoles, in a population from central Tibet, China. The oldest immature frogs had an age of 6 years; both the youngest sexually mature males and females were 3 years old. However, the majority of individuals bred for the first time at 5 years in males and 6 years in females. Females had greater average age (6.27 years) and lifespan (11 years) than males (5.72 and 10 years). At the population level, females, on average, were significantly larger in body length (40.3 mm) than males (37.0 mm). However, the significant size difference only occurred when both sexes were over 6 years old, at which most frogs attained maturity. Growth curve and growth rate estimated for each sex based on a von Bertalanffy model showed that females had a larger asymptotic size (54.2 mm) but smaller growth coefficient k (0.16) than males (40.0 mm, 0.37), and that females had greater growth rate than males in all age classes, except at metamorphosis. According to these results, we concluded that the sexual difference of growth between pre- and post-maturation periods contributed to the age-specific sexual size dimorphism of N. parkeri.

Formation of radial resin ducts and their associated secretory cells in loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) is influenced by the age and growth rate of the annual ring in which the ducts are formed. The spatial pattern of radial ducts on the tangential plane is nonrandom, exhibiting a regular or dispersed pattern. A significantly higher density of radial ducts was found in the inner, first-formed growth rings at all heights within the tree. Radial duct formation was found to be positively correlated with radial growth rate, when growth rate is expressed as increment of cross-sectional area growth. These findings may partially explain why older, slower growing trees tend to be more susceptible to attack by the southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann, and associated microorganisms, since the resin-producing system is a primary defense against these agents.

ABSTRACT Studies on age and growth of fish populations have direct application in fisheries and contribute for policies of conservation. Our aim was update information on the Micropogonias furnieri growth parameters based on sagittae otoliths annulis readings, and we expected that the studied population from Southeast Brazil can reach more longevity than the reported in the available literature. We examined 286 individuals between August-2010 and July-2011 from Ubatuba Bay, SP. The Total Length ranged 200-480 mm. The determined growth parameters were: Males, L∞ =523.4mm, k = 0.05×year-1, t0 = -8.78 year; Females L∞ = 573.5mm, k = 0.06 × year-1, t0 = -7.49 year. The MI and % of edge type evidenced the formation of one ring per year during autumn/winter, coinciding with low temperature and low growth rate. These results differed from those reported for the Vazzoler’s Population I (summer), and we detected higher longevity (45-48 years) as compared with the recorded in the available information.

Abstract. Here we show the use of the 210Pb-226Ra excess method to determine the growth rate of two corals from the world's largest known cold-water coral reef, Røst Reef, north of the Arctic circle off Norway. Colonies of each of the two species that build the reef, Lophelia pertusa and Madrepora oculata, were collected alive at 350 m depth using a submersible. Pb and Ra isotopes were measured along the major growth axis of both specimens using low level alpha and gamma spectrometry and trace element compositions were studied. 210Pb and 226Ra differ in the way they are incorporated into coral skeletons. Hence, to assess growth rates, we considered the exponential decrease of initially incorporated 210Pb, as well as the increase in 210Pb from the decay of 226Ra and contamination with 210Pb associated with Mn-Fe coatings that we were unable to remove completely from the oldest parts of the skeletons. 226Ra activity was similar in both coral species, so, assuming constant uptake of 210Pb through time, we used the 210Pb-226Ra chronology to calculate growth rates. The 45.5 cm long branch of M. oculata was 31 yr with an average linear growth rate of 14.4 ± 1.1 mm yr−1 (2.6 polyps per year). Despite cleaning, a correction for Mn-Fe oxide contamination was required for the oldest part of the colony; this correction corroborated our radiocarbon date of 40 yr and a mean growth rate of 2 polyps yr−1. This rate is similar to the one obtained in aquarium experiments under optimal growth conditions. For the 80 cm-long L. pertusa colony, metal-oxide contamination remained in both the middle and basal part of the coral skeleton despite cleaning, inhibiting similar age and growth rate estimates. The youngest part of the colony was free of metal oxides and this 15 cm section had an estimated a growth rate of 8 mm yr−1, with high uncertainty (~1 polyp every two to three years). We are less certain of this 210Pb growth rate estimate which is within the lowermost ranges of previous growth rate estimates. We show that 210Pb-226Ra dating can be successfully applied to determine the age and growth rate of framework-forming cold-water corals if Mn-Fe oxide deposits can be removed. Where metal oxides can be removed, large M. oculata and L. pertusa skeletons provide archives for studies of intermediate water masses with an up to annual time resolution and spanning over many decades.

AbstractThe growth dynamics of Phymaturus patagonicus, a diurnal, herbivorous and viviparous lizard from the Argentinean Patagonian steppe, was studied using eight juveniles (two born in the laboratory), 11 adult females and eight adult males. Histological cross sections of femoral bones were analysed to determine if individuals show osseous growth marks and if these marks provide useful age estimates. Individual ages were assessed after estimating the reabsorbed rings in relation to snout-vent length. There was a strong relationship between body length and estimated age, modelled by a sigmoidal curve. Sexual maturity was found to be reached at seven years in females and nine in males and the maximum life span was estimated to be 16 years. No difference in body length was observed between the same-age females and males. We postulate that severe environments such as the north Patagonian steppe play a significant role in the selection of not only modes of reproduction but also delayed maturity and prolonged reproductive cycles, a combination that results in low fecundity.

Granite massifs often contain caves, with dimensions ranging from a few meters up to 1,000 m, also referred to as pseudokarst. The speleothems in such caves are mostly composed of either Si-rich (commonly opal-A) or Al-rich authigenic mineraloids. Whereas the formation and geochemical composition of opal-A biospeleothems have been studied and are fairly well understood, knowledge on the Al-rich analogues is scarce. This work reports for the first time a study on the composition, accretion process, age and growth rate of an Al-rich speleothem type flowstone from the A Trapa Cave System (Galicia, NW Spain), developed in a granite cave. To understand the growth process, trickling water was analyzed and the deposition environment inside the cave was characterized. We found that the speleothems are alternating Si- and Al-rich layered deposits formed between 1,635 ± 75 and 1,243 ± 58 cal BP by percolating water that carries underground mineral grains, dissolved ions, and organic matter from soil and the weathered bedrock above the cave.
