Dimethyl-β-propiothetin has been reported from several species of freshwater and marine multicellular algae. Cultures of 14 species of unicellular marine algae were treated with cold aqueous alkali. Dimethyl sulphide was liberated from Syracosphaera carterae, Skeletonema costatum, Amphidinium carteri, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Tetraselmis sp. and Cyclotella cryptica, and is assumed to arise from dimethyl-β-propiothetin. The amounts of alkali-labile material varied, on a wet weight basis, from 0.07 to 2.9% (as thetin salt) in different organisms. The presence of the thetin in S. carterae was confirmed by other means. The thetin, and particularly its degradation products, acrylic acid and dimethyl sulphide, may influence actual fishing operations and also affect the quality of fishery products. The metabolic and ecological significance of these materials are reviewed and discussed.

Using a dialysis culture system for marine algae which allows for the recovery of high cell yield, we detected in the aqueous phase of the algal extracts an active component which inhibited gram-negative bacteria. Results show a direct relation between cell growth phase at time of harvest and the activity observed. It was possible to confirm previous results whereby Bacillariophyceae produce lipophilic substances inhibiting gram-positive terrestrial and marine bacteria. These findings corroborate the observation that Skeletonema costatum is more active man Phaeodactylum tricornutum against Staphyloccoci.

Micropollution is a serious environmental problem caused by continuous entry of trace quantities of toxic chemical substances into the aquatic environment. In the present study, three trophic levels of the aquatic ecosystems were used to evaluate the acute toxicities of environmentally important micropollutants including heavy metals, pesticides and drugs. There is a scarcity of information on toxicity of the studied substances on marine water algae. Among studied micropollutants, the most toxic chemical to Daphnia magna and Danio rerio was found to be 1-Chloro-2,4 dinitrobenzene with EC50 of 0.002 and 4.2 mg/L, respectively. Although this compound was also toxic to marine algae, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, arsenic showed the highest toxicity to the algae with EC50 of 2.4 mg/L. As compared to other organisms, D. magna was found to have higher sensitivity to all of the tested micropollutants.

Population growth and concentration factors for 65Zn and 137Cs have been measured for Achnanthes brevipes Agardh, Carteria sp. Diesing, Chlamydomonas sp. Ehrenberg, Dunaliella salina Teod., Nannochloris atotnus Butcher, and Phaeodactylum tricornutum Lewin subjected to factorial combinations of eight temperatures (6–40 °C) and ten salinities (3.5–44.0 p.p.t.). Regression coefficients were calculated for polynomial models describing response surfaces for growth and radionuclide concentration. Salinity was more important than temperature in describing population growth for Carteria, Dunaliella, Nannochloris and Phaeodactylum. No independent variable was consistently of primary importance in describing 137Cs concentration factors, while temperature accounted for more variation in 65Zn concentration factors than salinity or population growth in all algae except Dunaliella. Concentration factors for 65Zn were uniformly higher than 137Cs concentration factors.
