Abstract BACKGROUND Management of chronic cluster headache (CCH) remains a challenging endeavor, and the optimal surgical approach for medically refractory CCH remains controversial. OBJECTIVE To conduct a preliminary evaluation of the efficacy and safety of vidian neurectomy (VN) in patients with medically refractory CCH. METHODS Between March 2013 and December 2015, 9 CCH patients, all of whom had failed to respond to conservative therapy, underwent VN with a precise nerve cut and maximal preservation of the sphenopalatine ganglion. Data included demographic variables, cluster headache onset and duration, mean attack frequency, mean attack intensity, and pain disability index measures pre- and through 12-mo postsurgery. RESULTS Seven of the 9 cases (77.8%) showed immediate improvement. Improvement was delayed by 1 mo in 1 patient, after which the surgical effects of pain relief were maintained throughout the follow-up period. One patient (11.1%) did not improve after surgery. One year after VN, patients’ mean attack frequency, mean attack intensity, and pain disability index decreased by 54.5%, 52.9%, and 56.4%, respectively. No patient experienced treatment-related side effects or complications. CONCLUSION VN is an effective treatment method for CCH patients. Precise Vidian nerve identification and maximal preservation of the sphenopalatine ganglion may achieve good surgical outcomes and dramatically improve quality of life among patients, without significant adverse events.

AbstractInter-individual similarities in the electric organ discharge activity of immobile, isolated and undisturbed mormyrid fish were investigated. Two types of analysis were performed on the discharge patterns of 10 Gnathonemus petersii: (1) The Bout Interval Criterion method was used to categorise the intervals between consecutive electric pulses; (2) an analysis of sequences of acts was performed to study the serial ordering of the interpulse intervals. Interpulse intervals were demonstrated to belong to distinct classes, having similar limits for most animals. Most fish show five classes of interpulse intervals (23 to 68 ms; 69 to 108 ms; 109 to 170 ms; 171 to 212 ms; >212 ms), to which a sixth class (<23 ms) is added in some cases. Each class contains a similar number of intervals in all individuals. Particular associations were found between the occurrences of interpulse intervals belonging to different classes. Some of these associations (for example BB and EC) are displayed by most fish, whereas others express individual differences in the patterns of discharge. The discharge of immobile, undisturbed, isolated mormyrid fish is thus shown to present many similarities among individuals. Inter-individual differences exist only in the serial ordering of the intervals, where they arc best regarded as variations around a same theme. The absence of overlapping between the two main categories of interpulse intervals (category I: 69 to 108 ms; category II: 171 to 212 ms), as well as the constancy of their baselines, suggest that two oscillating systems participate to the electromotor command. The stochastic analysis of the serial ordering of the interpulse intervals suggest in addition that these two oscillators do not function independently. Momentaneous modifications of the activity of these two oscillators would provide an economical explanation for the various changes in the types of interpulse intervals associated with behavioural state or social interactions.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of long-term weekly prophylactic heme arginate (HA) infusions in reducing attack frequency and severity in female AIP patients.Methods: We report the results of five female AIP patients with frequent recurrent attacks (&gt;9/year) before and after institution of weekly prophylaxis with heme arginate (3 mg/kg body weight). All five cases had confirmed disease-associated mutations in the porphobilinogen deaminase gene, and all had received genetic and clinical counseling about AIP.Results: In the five included patients, average annual attack rate (AAR) in the year prior to HA prophylaxis was 11.82 (range 9.03–17.06), and average total HA usage was 32.60 doses (range: 13.71–53.13). After 2.58–14.64 years of HA prophylaxis, average AAR was reduced to 2.23 (range 0.00–5.58), and attack severity (i.e., doses required per attack) was reduced from 2.81 to 1.39 doses/attack. Liver and renal function remained stable during weekly administration of HA prophylaxis. The most common complications were port-A catheter-related events. No other complications or safety concerns occurred with long-term use of HA prophylaxis.Conclusion: Our study demonstrated women with AIP receiving weekly prophylactic HA infusions resulted in fewer episodes that required acute HA treatment while maintaining stable renal and liver function. Weekly prophylactic HA infusions effectively prevent frequent porphyric attacks and reduce attack severity.

In the experimental period, the larvae attack symptoms were manifested by the appearance of "goose neck", in control plot, the attack frequency being about 15.46% in 2008, 25.33% in 2009 and 26.88% in 2010. Of the four products used in preventing and fighting Diabrotica virgifera virgifera larvae species, we obtained best results with products applied to the seed.
