Numbers of immunological approach have been made to the amyloidosis through the variety of predisposing human diseases and the experimentally induced animals by the greater number of agents. The results suggest an important role of impaired immunity involving both humoral and cell-mediated aspects.Recently the author has succeeded in producing amyloidosis in the rabbits and mice by the injections of immune complex of heat denatured DNA.The aim of this report is to demonstrate the details of the ultrastructure of the amyloidosis induced by heterologous insoluble immune complex. Eleven of twelve mice, dd strain, subcutaneously injected twice a week with Freund's complete adjuvant and four of seven animals intraperitonially injected developed systemic amyloidosis two months later from the initial injections. The spleens were electron microscopically observed.

Endosomes are vesicular or tubular organelles that play important roles in transports of receptors and receptor―bound ligands during receptor-mediated endocytosis. The mechanisms of endocytic transports from clathrin-coated pits to lysosomes have been studied by many investigators. However, few studies were reported about the interactions between endosomes and cytoskeletons. In this study, Fc-receptor-mediated endocytosis in macrophages are investigated by quick-freezing and deep-etching (QF-DE) method combined with gold-labeled immune complex and “replica scraping method”.

As a result of vasectomy, spermatozoa are confined to the epididymis and vas deferens, where they degenerate, releasing antigens that enter the circulation or are engulfed by macrophages. Multiple antigens of the sperm can elicit production of autoantibodies; circulating anti-sperm antibodies are found in a large percentage of vasectomized men, indicating the immunogenicity of the sperm. The increased prevalence of macrophages in the liomen of the rhesus monkey testicular efferent ducts after vasectomy led to further study of this region. Frozen sections were used for evaluation of immunopathological status by fluorescence microscopy with fluorescein-conjugated antibody. Subsequent granular deposits of immune complexes were revealed by positive immunofluorescence staining for complement. The immune complex deposition in the basement membrane surrounding the efferent ducts implies that this region is involved in antigen leakage (Fig. 1).

Examination of the cranial morphology in Bombina orientalis (Anura: Discoglossidae) revealed the occurrence of additional dermal bones lying: a) between the nasals and frontoparietals, b) between frontoparietals, and c) on the tectum synoticum behind the frontoparietals. The presence of similar bones as well as extra ossifications lying in the midline in the rostral portion of skull was shown to be a rather common event among anurans. Based on the occurrence of bones with similar topology in crossopterygians and different stegocephalians, it was concluded that extra ossifications sporadically appearing in anurans are more likely to be ancient cranial elements than neomorphs. Additional dermal bones found in the anterior portion of the anuran skull are homologous to the postrostrals of crossopterygians; extra ossifications lying between the frontoparietals correspond to the bones with similar topology sporadically appearing in crossopterygians and stegocephalians; and extra bones situated behind the frontoparietals are homologous to the lateral extrascapulars (postparietals of stegocephalians) and the median extrascapular of crossopterygians. These extra bones were proposed to be inherited from the presumed common ancestor of all Gnathostomes and retained in anurans in the state of latent capacities. The sporadic appearance of these bones in anurans results from the phenotypical realization of these latent capacities.

<b><i>Background/Aims:</i></b> Renal vascular injury accounts for the poor outcomes of patients with IgA nephropathy (IgAN). In this study, we investigated whether endostatin, a potent inhibitor of angiogenesis, is associated with IgAN. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> Serum endostatin levels were detected in patients with IgAN, disease controls, and healthy controls, and the correlation among endostatin and clinicopathologic manifestations, as well as prognosis in patients with IgAN, was analyzed. In addition, serum endostatin levels were compared in patients “before” and “after” treatment. Data on endostatin expression in the renal interstitium of patients with IgAN were downloaded and analyzed from the GSE35489 array in the GEO database. The poly-IgA1 (pIgA) immune complex is widely recognized as the “trigger” of IgAN initiation. pIgA in the plasma of patients was extracted and used to stimulate human glomerular endothelial cells (GECs). Endostatin, IL-6, and CXCL1 in the cell supernatant were detected by ELISA kits. <b><i>Results:</i></b> We found that serum endostatin levels were significantly increased in patients with IgAN, as was endostatin expression in the renal interstitium. Patients with IgAN were divided into 2 groups according to the median value. The high endostatin expression group had significantly higher levels of serum creatinine and BUN and more severe tubular/interstitial damage. Moreover, patients with arteriolar injury and endothelial cell proliferation had higher serum endostatin levels. Patients with high serum endostatin levels had poor prognosis. According to the in vitro experiment, the GEC apoptosis rate and the supernatant levels of endostatin, IL-6, and CXCL1 were significantly increased following pIgA stimulation. <b><i>Conclusion:</i></b> Our study found that elevated endostatin expression was associated with disease severity and poor prognosis in patients with IgAN and can be upregulated by pIgA, but how it participates in the pathogenesis of IgAN deserves further exploration.
