Lankesterella alencari n. sp. a Sporozoa that occur in the blood and CNS of the South American frog Leptodactylus acellatus is described. Since the tissue forms of this parasite have been previously reported as belonging to the genus Toxoplasma, we attempted in fection of 2 species of amphibia (Bufo marinus an dLeptodactylus ocellatus) with a Toxoplasma strain of human origen; inoculation was by intraperitoneal injection of parasite-containing ascitic fluid from infected mice. Attempt of experimental inoculation of the parasite found in the CNS of L. ocellatus in a highly susceptible host (mice) was unsuccessful. These results suggest that Toxoplasma does not occur naturally in the amphibia; be related to Toxoplasma is excluded. The following genera of haematozoa found in brazilian amphibia have been considered briedfly: Haemobartonella, Cytamoeba, Dactylosoma, Hepatozoon and Trypanosoma.

A New Species

Recent studies have shown that species diversity of the South American frog genus Dendropsophus is significantly underestimated, especially in Amazonia. Herein, through integrative taxonomy a new species of Dendropsophus from the east bank of the upper Madeira River, Brazil is described. Based on molecular phylogenetic and morphological analyses, the new species is referred to the D. microcephalus species group, where it is differentiated from its congeners mainly by having a green bilobate vocal sac and an advertisement call comprising 1–4 monophasic notes emitted with a dominant frequency of 8,979–9,606 Hz. Based on intensive sampling conducted in the study area over the last ten years, the new species is restricted to the east bank of the upper Madeira River, although its geographic range is expected to include Bolivian forests close to the type locality.

1. The resting potential of the fibres of the South American frog Leptodactylus ocelatus has been measured using microelectrodes. 2. In 2 mM. potassium Ringer solution values of 85-103 mV. were obtained. The value for a given muscle depends upon the external K concentration and the relation between resting potential and the concentrations of K, Na and Cl in the medium can be fitted to the constant field solution of the diffusion equation. 3. Use of phosphate solutions in place of chloride solutions led to lower resting potentials at a given K concentration, which is understandable since the contribution of Cl ions to the resting potential is not present in the phosphate solution. 4. The action potential was observed. Its rate of fall was less when the positive overshoot was low than when the overshoot was high. 5. Analyses of muscles and plasma were made.
