UV-C irradiation is known to enhance plant resistance against insect pests. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of low doses of UV-C on Macrosiphum rosae infesting greenhouse rose (Rosa x hybrida) plants. The application of 2.5-kJ/m2 UV-C irradiation on rose leaves before infestation induced anti-herbivore resistance and negatively affected the aphid fecundity. No eggs and first instar nymphs were recorded on irradiated leaves, whereas an average of 4.3 and 2.7 eggs and 6.7 and 14 first instars were recorded on vars. “Etoile Brilante” and “Arlen Francis” untreated leaves, respectively. UV-C irradiation reduced the aphid population from naturally infested rose plants by up to 58%. In a greenhouse pot trial (GPT) in 2019, UV-C irradiation minimised the initial aphid population six hours after treatment. UV-C elicited host resistance and, also, helped in aphid repulsion without killing the adult individuals. UV-C did not affect the physiological responses of rose plants. The net CO2 assimilation of the UV-C irradiated plants ranged between 10.55 and 15.21 μmol/m2. sec for “Arlen Francis” and between 10.51 and 13.75 μmol/m2. sec for “Etoile Brilante” plants. These values, with only a few exceptions, were similar to those recorded to the untreated plants.

A study was carried out from January to December 2005 in four different sites of Kathmandu district. Infestation pattern of mite and aphid was observed in different canopy levels (top, middle and bottom) of rose plant. Top part of the plant showed highest aphid infestation followed by middle part and bottom part showed little or no infestation. Similar trend was observed in case of mite, with highest distribution in top, middle part and relatively low in bottom part. Macrosiphum rosae and Tetranychus sp. were found to be the dominant pests infesting rose plants in open and protected conditions respectively.Key words: Rose; mites; aphids; infestation; canopy level; KathmanduJournal of Natural History Museum Vol. 23, 2008 Page 88-91

Patterns of geographic and seasonal genetic variation were assessed in natural populations of cyclically parthenogenetic rose aphids Macrosiphum rosae (L.). Nine populations were studied for a red–green colour morph and 30 allozyme loci (20 coding for enzymes and 10 for abundant proteins). Genetic variation was found at 5 of 20 enzyme loci (20%); all 10 abundant proteins proved monomorphic. The average heterozygosity was 4.3%. At some polymorphic loci genotypic frequencies showed significant deviations from Hardy–Weinberg proportions. Six local populations from Hamilton, Ontario, were studied for seasonal variation at the colour locus and at two polymorphic esterase loci (Est-2 and Est-4). All three loci showed large changes in genotypic frequencies over the season during the asexual cycle, but only for Est-4 were changes consistent among populations. This locus undergoes a regular seasonal cycle, the directional changes during the asexual phase presumably being balanced by changes during the sexual phase. The frequencies of three-locus genotypes within each locality fluctuated dramatically over the course of a season, reflecting the domination of local infestations by a few particularly successful clones. We speculate that because of such clonal competition followed by extensive migration, much of the selectively neutral variation is purged from aphid populations. The remaining polymorphic loci, which are mostly di- or tri-allelic, are subject to balancing natural selection at the gene or at closely linked loci. The Est-4 in rose aphids is an example of such a selectively maintained polymorphism.Key words: aphids, allozyme variation, seasonal variation, parthenogenesis, clonal selection, population structure.

The paper presents the results of studies of the seven-spotted beetle ( Coccinella septempunctata L.) life cycle, which has 2 generations in the climatic zone of southern Russia. The main stages of the life cycle are the emergence of imago from winter diapause, the first generation from egg to imago, the second generation from egg to imago, the care of adults for wintering. The eating behavior of coccinellid was studied at each stage of the life cycle, which showed the presence of a small herbivorous period (phytophagous beetles), most of the cycle of the beetles had a predatory lifestyle (entomophage beetles). Experiments in the natural and artificial conditions of studying the nutrition of a seven-point beetle showed that adult beetles were more effective in consuming aphids than the larvae. It was also established that in the natural environment, the degree of palatability, both in the larva and in the imago, was directly dependent on the density of the aphids: as the aphid decreased, the feeding intensity of the beetles decreased. To increase the efficiency of aphid consumption, the joint content of two predatory beetles in the imago stage was used: a seven-spotted beetle ( Coccinella septempunctata L.) and ground beetle ( Tomocarabus bessarabicus concretus Fischer von Waldheim). With such simultaneous use (polyculture), a synergistic effect was observed in their consumption of rosan aphid ( Macrosiphum rosae L.).

The aphid-transmitted Moroccan watermelon mosaic virus (MWMV; Potyvirus, Potyviridae) is an emerging pathogen in cucurbit crops in the Mediterranean basin but information on its transmitting vector species is limited. This study aimed to record the competence of 22 species of the Greek aphid fauna to vector MWMV. Timed-probe transmission experiments and arena tests were performed using laboratory colonies of aphid species abundant in field surveys; less common species were tested as apterous individuals collected directly from field plants in mass-inoculation (nonpersistent) tests. Depending on the test, aphids were tested in cohorts of 10 or 20 individuals on zucchini (Cucurbita pepo L.) plants and the frequency of transmission was calculated for a single aphid. Among 12 species tested in timed-probe transmission tests, Myzus persicae nicotianae (74.0%) appeared to be the most efficient vector, followed by M. persicae (48.0%), Aphis gossypii (11.8%), an unidentified Aphis sp. (11.8%), and A. spiraecola (11.0%). Alatae of nine species tested in arena tests transmitted the virus in rates varying from 0.7 to 53.6%; M. persicae was the most efficient species in virus spread. In mass-inoculation tests, the probability that apterae of 12 aphid species collected from field plants transmitted MWMV fluctuated from 0.3 to 5.3%. No transmission was obtained by Brevicoryne brassicae. The following species are reported as new vectors of MWMV: A. fabae, A. nerii, A. spiraephaga, A. umbrella, Capitophorus eleaegni, Dysaphis (Pomaphis) pyri, Macrosiphoniella sanborni, Macrosiphum rosae, Myzocallis castanicola, Myzus persicae nicotianae, M. cerasi, M. varians, Phorodon humuli, Ovatus crataegarius, Takecallis arundicolens (first report in Greece), Uroleucon sonchi, and U. (Uromelan) aeneum. These results contribute to a better understanding of MWMV epidemiology.

Цель. Изучение инсектицидной активности производных 1,3,4-оксадиазолов в отношении сокососущих вредителей садовых культур (Aphis pomi) и декоративных растений (Macrosiphum rosae). Методы и материалы исследования. Материалами для исследований послужили алкилпроизводные 5-(п-Аминофенил)-1,3,4-оксадиазол-2-тиона, формулы которых приведены в тексте статьи, взрослые особи яблоневой тли (Aphis pomi) и розовой тли (Macrosiphum rosae). Методы исследования: первичный скрининг инсектицидной активности изучали методом инкубации в чашках Петри взрослых особей насекомых-вредителей. Насекомых подвергали действию веществ в течение 24 часов. Результаты. Сокососущий вредитель – тля наносит значительный вред растениям, распространяя различные вирусы, поражающие сельскохозяйственные культуры. Для борьбы с сокососущими вредителями необходимы средства химической защиты растений с малой токсичностью для окружающей среды. По результатам скрининга доказано, что биологическая эффективность веществ 2-гексилтио-5-(п-Аминофенил)-1,3,4-оксадиазола (1), 2-октилтио-5-(п-Аминофенил)-1,3,4-оксадиазола (3) и 2-нонилтио-5-(п-Аминофенил)-1,3,4-оксадиазол (4) составляла 98.0%, 97.0% и 99.5% в отношении особи M. rosae. Под воздействием 2-гексилтио-5-(п-Аминофенил)-1,3,4-оксадиазола (1), 2-октилтио-5-(п-Аминофенил)-1,3,4-оксадиазола (3) и 2-нонилтио­-5-(п-Аминофенил)-1,3,4-оксадиазола (4) в дозе 5.0 мг/мл смертность особейA. pomi достигла 99.0%, 83.0% и 90.0%, соответственно. Впервые изучена летальная концентрация (LC50) 2-гексилтио-5-(п-Аминофенил)-1,3,4-оксадиазола (1), 2-гептилтио-5-(п-Аминофенил)-1,3,4-оксадиазола (2), 2-октилтио-5-(п-Аминофенил)-1,3,4-оксадиазола (3), 2-нонилтио-5-(п-Аминофенил)-1,3,4-оксадиазола (4) при контактном действии с насекомым. Заключение. Таким образом, поиск и создание инсектицидов низкой токсичности для окружающей среды, предотвращающие возникновение резистентности на основе алкилпроизводных 5-(п-Аминофенил)-1,3,4-оксадиазол-2-тиона в защите растений является актуальным направлениям. Исследование показало, что 2-гексилтио-5-(п-Аминофенил)-1,3,4-оксадиазол (1), 2-октилтио-5-(п-Аминофенил)-1,3,4-оксадиазол (3) и 2-нонилтио-5-(п-Аминофенил)-1,3,4 оксадиазол (4) в концентрации 0.5 мг/мл сильно токсичны для особей M. rosae и A. pomi. Работа по использованию алкилпроизводных 5-(п-Аминофенил)-1,3,4-оксадиазол-2-тионов в качестве сельскохозяйственных средств защиты будут продолжены.
