A new technique to assess the reliability of published compression index equations in terms of soil void ratio is presented. Several published equations pertaining to different soil types are examined in terms of accuracy and applicability. The new technique employs regression analysis to examine a substantial number of published compression data objectively. The traditional bias inherent in the selection of the number of data points and the range of void ratios for a given regression equation is eliminated. This was made possible by creating ranges for the compression index irrespective of the data set involved. This technique revealed that a strong correlation exists between the slopes and intercepts of all published equations. The slopes and intercepts of the newly developed regression equations were used to compare several well know published equations to assess accuracy and applicability. The proposed technique permits the examination of the authenticity of any published empirical equations relating to the compression index of clay to void ratio.

DNA polymerase from Escherichia coli was studied using a new technique of micro-disc-electro· phoresis on polyacrylamid gel carried out in 5 μl capillary tubes. Two methods for the identification of DNA polymerase among other protein zones of crude preparations were developed:1. The binding test in which DNA polymerase forms a complex with poly d (A — T) in the presence of Mg2⊕ ions, d ATP, and dTTP. This complex of rather high molecular weight cannot enter the separation gel and remains in the interphase between concentration and separation gel. Consequently, the appropriate zones are missing after staining with amido black 10 B in acetic acid.2. The polymerisation test in which the separation gel contains a minute amount of poly d (A—T) primer, sufficient to induce an extensive synthesis of poly d (A—T) by DNA polymerase in the gel when incubated with d ATP and dTTP in the presence of Mg2⊕ions. The newly synthesized poly d (A— T) is stained with pyronine and can be estimated with a sensitive microdensitometer.The application of this micro-method to biochemical problems is discussed. Earlier findings of a multiplicity of E. coli DNA polymerase are confirmed.

AbstractThe Magellanic Clouds remain an ideal place to study the properties of Cepheid variables. In this paper, we review historical and current work on Cepheids in LMC and SMC clusters, present new results for NGC 1866 and NGC 2164, and describe a new technique for automated selection of Cepheid variables using two-color photometry. We also emphasize the numerous advantages of high-precision radial velocities in the study of Magellanic Cloud variables.

Adaptive training requires the selection of an adaptive variable which is related to task difficulty, is quantifiable, and can be adjusted over a range commensurate with the trainee's skill. The Effective Time Constant (te) of the man-machine system is proposed as a suitable adaptive variable since it is based upon definable properties of the machine and the operator and has been shown to be related to task difficulty.
