Presidential address Fourteen years of European Public Choice Society research

Abstract La riunione annuale della European Public Choice Society ha avuto luogo quest’anno in Italia (a Reggio Calabria, dal 22 al 25 aprile 1987).I lavori si sono svolti in un’atmosfera particolare, dato che si è trattato del primo incontro dopo I’attribuzione al Prof. Buchanan del premio Nobel per I’Economia, un riconoscimento che, oltre a riguardare in modo diretto il suo destinatario, è anche apparso come una autorevole indicazione dell’importanza della teoria delle scelte pubbliche, di cui il Prof. Buchanan è illustre esponente.Le relazioni principali sono state presentate dallo stesso Prof. Buchanan, sul tema del costituzionalismo economico (con un interessante commento di Alan Peacock), dal Prof. Rowley, sul Calculus of Consent di Buchanan e Tullock a venticinque anni dalla pubblicazione, e dal Prof. Mueller, sulle votazioni con metodo probabilistico.II convegno annuale della EPCS è anche un’occasione per confronti con le riunioni degli anni precedenti, a partire dal primo convegno, che ebbe luogo nel 1972. Anche quest’ultimo incontro ha confermato la continua crescita della Società, sia per il numero dei partecipanti, sia per I’interesse sempre più ampio che i suoi lavori riscuotono.

On June 12, 2012 Elinor Ostrom died. She was Distinguished Professor, Arthur F. Bentley Professor of Political Science, and founder of the Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis at Indiana University (now renamed in honor of her and her husband Vincent, who also passed away this year). Lin served as the President of the American Political Science Association and the Public Choice Society and was the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Economics (2009). She was an enthusiastic contributor to APLS Annual Meetings—she organized panels, served as a plenary speaker at our 2006 meeting on the IU campus, and gave the keynote address at the 2010 meeting in Bloomington.
