Material Information

Three-dimensional fatigue failure criteria for unidirectional fiber composites under states of cyclic stress are established in terms of quadratic stress polynomials which are expressed in terms of the transversely isotropic invariants of the cyclic stress. Two distinct fatigue failure modes, fiber mode, and matrix mode, are modeled separately. Material information needed for the failure criteria are the S-N curves for single stress components. A preliminary approach to incorporate scatter into the failure criteria is presented.

SummaryNishihara’s combined bending and torsion out-of-phase fatigue limit data are analysed. The Tresca shear stress failure criterion predicts strengths up to 30 per cent higher than observed. It thus appears that renewed attention should be given to the basic problem of developing reliable combined stress failure criteria. It is suggested that new test methods will be required for this purpose.

Abstract Fretting occurs when there is cyclic relative motion of extremely small amplitude between two tightly fit mating surfaces. In this process, the tight fitting load may lead to adhesion of mating surface. The subsequent relative movement breaks the adhesion and lead to local grooves and pits. The localized damage in conjunction with the stresses associated with the cyclic relative motion may lead to surface cracking. This crack subsequently may propagate by fatigue provided there is high enough cyclic stress at that location. The paper discusses a blade failure induced by such fretting related fatigue. The metallurgical evaluation of the fracture surfaces of the blades showed evidence of classical fatigue failure. However, the crack initiation location did not coincide with high stress location identified by the finite element analysis. This discrepancy along with the evidence of fretting at the crack initiation sites confirms that failures were induced by fretting. Finally, some methods to eliminate or minimize fretting damage are discussed.

Most of the ice-resistant jacket platforms in Bohai Sea have been close to or reached their service life. In order to keep the platforms perform safely, a reasonable risk assessment of the existing platforms should be considered. The hazard of the structural fatigue failure under the ice-induced vibrations is so serious, which plays an important role in the safety of the platforms. In this paper, the general process of the structural safety assessment based on the fatigue analysis is established. Firstly, risk assessment of fatigue failure needs to determine whether the cyclic stress of hot-spot induced by ice-vibrations under normal ice condition is so significant. Then, the method of estimating ice-induced fatigue life of existing platforms is developed based on the field data and the safe life design method. Finally, as an application example, the safety assessment of one old jacket platform in Bohai Bay is carried on, which can provide a warrant for owners to repair or reject platforms.

To acquire the fatigue characteristics of viscoelastic suspensions mounted in newly-developed construction vehicles, an experimental study of fatigue characteristics should be carried out on the vibration damping rubber suspension components. However, due to the lack of corresponding fatigue failure criteria for the damping rubber components, how to determine the parameters for the accelerated fatigue experiments becomes a new research subject. Based on the accelerated fatigue experiments on the viscoelastic suspensions, the parameters on fatigue failure characteristics such as the cycle index (ne), the slope (k) of S–N logarithm curve and the allowable temperature rise, and so on, were investigated. To develop a new viscoelastic suspension for the crawler bulldozer, three types of rubber made from different formulas for the viscoelastic suspensions were studied and their experimental loads were divided into 8 levels in terms of the practical working conditions of the bulldozer. The accelerated fatigue experiments of viscoelastic suspensions were performed and the obtained parameters were applied to the fatigue experiments for the suspensions of a newly-designed 386 kW crawler bulldozer. Under the industrial application over 4,000 hours, the results were shown to be consistent with the predicted experimental values.
