Screening for resistance to Elsinoe ampelina (de Bary) Shear, causal agent of grape anthracnose, in grapevine seedlings is commonly conducted by natural infection over 3 to 4 years in the vineyard. The objective of this research was to develop a greenhouse screening method for selecting grapevine seedlings with resistance to anthracnose. Spores of E. ampelina were obtained from 3- to 4-week-old cultures on potato dextrose agar. Inoculum concentrations ranging from 1.3 × 103 to 1.3 × 107 E. ampelina conidia per mL were evaluated and 106 conidia/mL was optimum. The time of incubation of seedlings in a moist chamber after inoculation varied from 24 to 120 hours with 24 to 72 hours resulting in good symptom development. Temperatures in the moist chamber from 16 to 32 °C were evaluated and the most consistent results were obtained at 20 to 28 °C. The most effective method for selecting anthracnose-resistant grape seedlings in the two-to-three true-leaf stage was misting the seedlings with a suspension containing 106 conidia/mL in water and placing the inoculated seedlings in a moist chamber at 24 °C for 48 hours, followed by 8 days on a greenhouse bench. Resistant seedlings from the greenhouse screening (those with <10 foliar lesions) were transplanted into the vineyard and found to be resistant to anthracnose infection under rainy, humid conditions. This greenhouse procedure for selecting grapevine cultivars and breeding lines with resistance to anthracnose is accurate, economical, and labor-saving.

Blue mould, Peronospora tabacina Adam., is the most serious disease of tobacco in north Oueensland. Two cultivars were released in 1969 and one in 1972 which were resistant to the north Queensland strain of blue mould, APTI. During 1972 and 1973, a new strain of mould, APT2, became established in the area. The APT1 resistant cultivars, which carried resistance from Nicotiana debneyi or N. goodspeedii, were susceptible to APT2. Breeding lines carrying blue mould resistance from these species and from N. exigua, N. velutina or N. excelsior were introduced for screening for resistance to the new strain of mould. Some of these lines had been developed by backcrossing and selection, some from crosses between lines carrying resistance from different sources and others by following backcrossing by production of doubled haploids through anther culture. Following the screening of these lines for blue mould resistance and for commercial attributes, three backcross lines, three double haploid lines and one line carrying resistance from two sources were selected for further screening as potential commercial cultivars.

In a competitive variety trial, promising selection lines of sugar sorghum were studied in the Lower Volga region. Based on a set of signs, the best lines were identified, which are recommended for transfer to the State Variety Testing. Breeding lines, which are distinguished by high values of commercially valuable traits, can be used in planned crosses to create highly productive varieties and hybrids of sugar sorghum.

The flight activity of aphid pests of wheat potato lettuce and squash is currently monitored in New Zealand using 75 m suction traps However there has been little research comparing aphid suction trap catches with crop infestation levels The relationship between the average number of aphids (Rhopalosiphum padi) sampled from wheat plants and the average number of aphids caught in weekly 75 m suction trap samples was examined A significant positive relationship indicated that numbers of aphids caught in suction traps reflected the numbers of aphids infesting wheat fields In another experiment potato aphid flights (mostly Myzus persicae) caught in a 75 m suction trap were compared with a nearby windvane trap Aphid numbers in both traps reflected similar trends However the suction trap caught approximately 10 times more aphids than the windvane trap Thus 75 m suction traps provide a useful tool for assessing aphid infestation levels in crops

The article presents the results of the analysis of the biochemical composition of selected in the competitive variety testing of new varieties and promising lines of spring barley, studied on the experimental field ISA-branch of FGBNU FNAC VIM in 2016-2018. Result of research in different years of water availability among the rooms was allocated a group of high-protein barley with improved feed value: 4 varieties, 2 of which are on the state variety testing, and 2 promising lines. The range of variation of protein content in the grain of the selected samples varied from 13.1 to 14.5 %, lysine – from 0.48 to 0.52 %, weight of 1000 grains-from 48.0 to 53.5 g. According to the data obtained the highest value of protein in grain was observed in krupnosortnogo varieties Zlatoyar (GSI), amounting on average for 14.5 %. The increase was equal to 1.1% in relation to the control variety Yaromir. With an average yield of 6.52 t/ha in the years of research grade Accounting have provided protein per hectare in the amount of 0,94 t/ha. A new variety Sudar´ (GSI) and breeding line 149/4-12 h 788 and 129/1-14 h 907 this indicator has been less productive, however, exceeded the grade Yaromir 0.10 to 0.16 t/ha. Given the higher productivity of new promising varieties and breeding lines, the collection of lysine per unit area they have 12.7, 30.8 per cent was higher than that of the Promej class and 10.6-23.6% more than in the variety Yaromir, which indicates their high biological value. Selected hulless line 1137 h is also an encouraging source of protein and other nutrients of plant origin. The selected lines and new varieties, regardless of weather conditions, were able to ensure the production of high-protein and sources' grain for feed purposes, while maintaining productivity.

The present study was carried out to evaluate eight promising Spanish bunch groundnut genotypes during four consecutive year (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017) to study genotype × environmental interactions and to identify stable sources of fresh seed dormancy in Spanish background in groundnut. Pooled analysis of variance revealed highly significant differences among the genotypes and genotype × environmental interactions for fresh seed dormancy at weekly intervals indicating that differential behavior of genotypes for fresh seed dormancy over the environmental conditions. Based on the results of intensity and duration of dormancy and germination stability index, identified four stable advanced breeding lines viz., PBS 12192, PBS 12187, PBS 12191 and PBS 12190 having high fresh seed dormancy of three week and two stable advanced breeding lines viz., PBS 12189 and PBS 12171 having high fresh seed dormancy of two week. Therefore, these genotypes can be used as novel genetic stock of fresh seed dormancy in Spanish bunch and they can be integrated into breeding programs to develop high yielding Spanish bunch cultivars with 2-3 weeks of fresh seed dormancy to avoid yield losses due to in-situ germination at the time of crop maturity.

The present study was conducted to transfer multiple rust resistance in a popular but rust susceptible wheat cultivar HS295. Selected derivatives WBM3632 and WBM3635 have been developed from a cross, HS295*2/FLW20//HS295*2/ FLW13 using bulk-pedigree method of breeding. Advance line WBM3697 selected from a breeding line WBM3532 was named as HS661. This line was evaluated for seedling resistance to a wide array of rust pathotypes and found to possess resistance to all the three rusts. HS661 was also tested under field conditions and showed adult plant resistance to leaf rust (AC1=0.6), stem rust (ACI=2.7) and strpe rust (AC1=3.8). Among 34 F3 lines, 28 were tested positive for SSR marker Xwmc221 indicating the presence of Lr19/Sr25. Out of 14 selected F4 lines from F3, nine were homozygous positive for Lr19/Sr25. The advanced breeding lines viz., WBM3632 (WBM3697) and WBM3635 were also positive for Lr19/Sr25 with SCAR marker SCS265512. SSR marker Xgwm1 producing 215 bp band in Avst-15, FLW13 and HS661 confirmed the presence of Yr15 . Agronomically, HS661 was comparable with recipient variety HS295 and superior to a standard check HS490 under late sown restricted irrigation production conditions of NHZ. HS661 may serve as a potential donor for creating new usable variability against all the three rusts.
