Abstract Silting of water reservoirs by sediments detached through soil erosion is a serious water management problem. One of the solutions is direct application of sediments to the soil. The aim of the paper is to monitor the quality of bottom sediments taken from selected water reservoirs in the eastern Slovakia (Hervartov, Nižný Žipov, Byšta) and to evaluate their quality according to legislation. The results showed that the concentrations of total nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in sediments are higher than in soils taken from the vicinity of reservoirs.Simultaneously, it was confirmed that the sediment in the evaluated reservoirs meets the physicochemical parameters according to the Act No. 188/2003 Coll. for direct application to the soil.

The research dedicated to modeling of flood mitigation on the river basin with help of simulation of flood control by virtual small water reservoirs located in different places of the river system. Such problem decided with help of modeling of flood hydrograph and its routing through water reservoir on the base GIS. Reducing the degree of flooding should occur due to the limited hydraulic flow capacity of the water flow by dam spillways without flood control by people. The offered model is represented on the example of concrete river basin. Results have showed relevance of the model for flood mitigation on the river basin.

AbstractThe areas of northern Poland are typical examples of recently formed post-glacial landscapes with a very large number of small ponds. Phycology of these ponds has been seldom studied, especially when compared to data collected from lager post-glacial lakes. The aim of our study was to determine the importance of small ponds to the biodiversity of algae.In 1996-2002 and 2012-13, we carried out phycological studies in 20 small ponds located in fields and forests. During the study period, we recorded the presence of 503 taxa of algae. The flora of algae was unique in each pond. Another important and frequent observation was the total and rapid “rebuilding” of algal flora.Statistical analyses revealed some other important facts, including the importance of small ponds to algal biodiversity. The average number of taxa recorded during the studies of individual water reservoirs was 56, thus much less than usually recorded in typical large lakes. But when we take the large number of small ponds into consideration, it appears that they represent more than 97% of the populations of algae and for this reason they are important to the biodiversity of algae.
