Web usage mining is used to find out fascinating consumer navigation patterns which can be applied to a lot of real-world problems, such as enriching websites or pages, generating newly topic or product recommendations and consumer behavior studies, etc. In this paper, an attempt has been made to provide a taxonomical classification of web usage mining applications with two levels of hierarchy. Further, the ontology for various categories of the web usage mining applications has been developed and to prove the completeness of proposed taxonomy, a rigorous case study has been performed. The comparative study with other existing classifications of web usage mining applications has also been performed.

Mobility training programs for helping the blind navigate through unknown places with a White-Cane significantly improve their mobility. However, what is the effect of new assistive technologies, offering more information to the blind user, on the underlying premises of these programs such as navigation patterns?We developed the virtual-EyeCane, a minimalistic sensory substitution device translating single-point-distance into auditory cues identical to the EyeCane’s in the real world. We compared performance in virtual environments when using the virtual-EyeCane, a virtual-White-Cane, no device and visual navigation. We show that the characteristics of virtual-EyeCane navigation differ from navigation with a virtual-White-Cane or no device, and that virtual-EyeCane users complete more levels successfully, taking shorter paths and with less collisions than these groups, and we demonstrate the relative similarity of virtual-EyeCane and visual navigation patterns. This suggests that additional distance information indeed changes navigation patterns from virtual-White-Cane use, and brings them closer to visual navigation.

While navigating the world, we pick up on patterns of where things tend to appear. According to theories of memory and studies of animal behavior, knowledge of these patterns emerges gradually over days or weeks, via consolidation of individual navigation episodes. Here we discover that navigation patterns can also be extracted online, prior to the opportunity for offline consolidation, as a result of rapid statistical learning. Human participants navigated a virtual water maze in which platform locations were drawn from a spatial distribution. Within a single session, participants increasingly navigated through the mean of the distribution. This behavior was better simulated by random walks from a model with only an explicit representation of the current mean, compared to a model with only memory for the individual platform locations. These results suggest that participants rapidly summarized the underlying spatial distribution and used this statistical knowledge to guide future navigation.
