A novel technique to estimate stiffness in buildings is presented. In contrast with most of the available work in the literature that resorts to diverse forms of modal analysis, this local technique is based on the propagation of a Ricker pulse through the structure and on measuring the wave arrival times at each story of the building, represented as a single layer in a multiple stratum model. These arrival times are later used to recuperate building stiffness at each story. Wave propagation is based on the Thomson-Haskell method, that allows to generalize the wave propagation method to multi-story buildings without significant changes to the original formulation. The number of calculated parameters is small in comparison with methods based on modal analysis. This technique provides and quick and easy methodology to assess building integrity and is an interesting alternative to verify results obtained by other identification methods. Simulation results for building with heterogeneous characteristics across the stories confirm the feasibility of the proposal.

Abstract Viscoelastic materials are widely used for vibroacoustic solutions due to their ability to mitigate vibration and sound. Wave propagation methods are based on the measurement of the waveform pattern of a transitory pulse in one-dimensional structures. The time evolution of the pattern can be used to deduce the material elasticity and damping characteristics. The most popular propagation methods, namely Hopkinson bar methods, assume no dispersion, i.e. the complex elasticity modulus is not frequency-dependent. This is not significant for resilient materials such as elastomers. More recent approaches have been developed to measure frequency-dependent properties from a pulse propagating in a slender bar. We showed in previous works how to adapt these techniques for shorter samples of materials, representing a real advance, as extrusion is a cumbersome process for many materials. The main concept was to reconstruct the time history of the wave propagating in a composite structure composed of a long incident bar made of a known material and extended by a shorter sample bar. Then the viscoelastic properties of the sample material were determined in the frequency domain within an inverse method held in the time domain. In industry, most isolation solutions using mounts or bushings must support structural weights. This is why it is particularly interesting to know the viscoelastic properties of the material in stressed state. Here, we show how to overcome this challenging issue. The theoretical framework of the computational approach is detailed and the method is experimentally verified.

Research on wave propagation in liquid filled vessels is often motivated by the need to understand arterial blood flows. Theoretical and experimental investigation of the propagation of waves in flexible tubes has been studied by many researchers. The analytical one-dimensional frequency domain wave theory has a great advantage of providing accurate results without the additional computational cost related to the modern time domain simulation models. For assessing the validity of analytical and numerical models, well defined in vitro experiments are of great importance. The objective of this paper is to present a frequency domain analytical model based on the one-dimensional wave propagation theory and validate it against experimental data obtained for aortic analogs. The elastic and viscoelastic properties of the wall are included in the analytical model. The pressure, volumetric flow rate, and wall distention obtained from the analytical model are compared with experimental data in two straight tubes with aortic relevance. The analytical results and the experimental measurements were found to be in good agreement when the viscoelastic properties of the wall are taken into account.
