AbstractThe transcription factor GATA4 is broadly expressed in nascent foregut endoderm. As development progresses, GATA4 is lost in the domain giving rise to the stratified squamous epithelium of the esophagus and forestomach (FS), while it is maintained in the domain giving rise to the simple columnar epithelium of the hindstomach (HS). Differential GATA4 expression within these domains coincides with the onset of distinct tissue morphogenetic events, suggesting a role for GATA4 in diversifying foregut endoderm into discrete esophageal/FS and HS tissues. By eliminating GATA4 in the developing HS or maintaining GATA4 in the developing FS, we identified GATA4 as an essential, principal regulator of simple columnar epithelium morphogenesis within the developing HS. GATA4- deficient HS epithelium adopted FS-like fate, and conversely, GATA4- expressing FS epithelium adopted HS-like fate. Underlying structural changes in these epithelia were broad changes in gene expression networks attributable to GATA4 directly activating or repressing expression of HS or FS defining transcripts. Our data implicate GATA4 as having a primary role in suppressing an esophageal/FS transcription factor network during HS development to promote a columnar epithelium. Moreover, GATA4-dependent phenotypes in developmental mutants reflected changes associated with Barrett’s esophagus, suggesting that developmental biology can provide insight into human disease mechanisms.

The stratified squamous epithelium which lines the ruminal compartment of the bovine stomach performs at least three important functions. (1) The upper keratinized layer forms a protective shield against the rough, fibrous, constantly moving ingesta. (2) It is an organ of absorption since a number of substances are absorbed directly through the epithelium. These include short chain fatty acids, potassium, sodium and chloride ions, water, and many others. (3) The cells of the deeper layers metabolize butyric acid and to a lesser extent propionic and acetic acids which are the fermentation products of rumen digestion. Because of the functional characteristics, this epithelium is important in the digestive process of ruminant species which convert large quantities of rough, fibrous feed into energy.Tissue used in this study was obtained by biopsy through a rumen fistula from clinically healthy, yearling holstein steers. The animals had been fed a typical diet of hay and grain and the ruminal papillae were fully developed. The tissue was immediately immersed in 1% osmium tetroxide buffered to a pH of 7.4 and fixed for 2 hrs. The tissue blocks were embedded in Vestapol-W, sectioned with a Porter-Blum microtome with glass knives and stained with lead hydroxide. The sections were studied with an RCA EMU 3F electron microscope.

(Abstract.)In man, in the rabbit, and some other animals the trachea is built up of a series of cartilaginous rings incomplete behind; the rings being completed in this position by the trachealis muscle.The mucous membrane forms a smooth cylindrical lining for the whole tube, and is covered by a ciliated epithelium.In the cat and dog the cartilage rings completely encircle the trachea, and overlap posteriorly, and the trachealis muscle, which is well developed, is placed outside the cartilage, and has a powerful action in varying the diameter of the tube.When this muscle contracts the overlapping ends of the cartilage ride one upon another, and the projecting ends form a vertical ridge down the inside of the trachea, which can be readily seen on slitting the organ open. This ridge is separated by a deep groove from the other end of the plate.

Zimmermann-Laband syndrome is an inherited disorder that is characterized by abnormalities of the head, face, hands, and feet. Most children with this disorder have generalized hypertrichosis, large gingivae, and hypoplasia of the fingernails and toenails. We report a male infant who exhibited typical features of Zimmermann-Laband syndrome with an unusual histopathologic finding. Excised tissue from the infant's gingivae showed papillary projections that were composed of hyperplastic stratified squamous epithelium with different amounts of keratinization.

The Southern Caracara is a bird of prey, of the family Falconidae, inhabits all the Brazilian territory, they are omnivorous birds adapted for hunting. The digestive system of the predators presents differences in their morphology due to their eating habits. Knowing the importance of the gastrointestinal system, this study aims to carry out a histological study of the tongue, esophagus and the crop of Polyborus plancus. For this purpose, eight avian of both sexes, with different body weights and ages were used, they were euthanized and the organs were collected, fixed, dehydrated and stained with hematoxylin-eosin. It was noted that the tongue has stratified squamous epithelium with mucous glands and with different degrees of keratinization. The esophagus and crop have four well developed muscle layers and mucous glands. Additionally, in the crop there is presence of an adventitious layer that consists of loose connective tissue. We conclude that the tongue, the esophagus and the crop of the Southern Caracara have similar histological organization of several birds like the Pekin Ducks, ostriches, domestic chicken and partridges.

Fissure in Ano ( Parikartika) is a vertical tear or an elongated longitudinal ulcer in the long axis of stratified squamous epithelium of the lower anal canal. Ancient text couldn’t give a brief idea about this condition. Mainly it has been described as complication of Bastikarma and Atisar. It is so named in which sharp cutting pain is felt in the anus. For that Modern surgical treatment of choice is again has limitations such as faecal incontinence. Hence, karpoor Ghrita having effective Vranaropan & vedanashamak, tridoshaghna  property i.e. it relieves burning sensation quickly. So we modified a method of Local Application is conceived for this study.

Epidermoid cysts are common cystic lesions in the skin, ovaries, and testicles, but their occurrence in the oral cavity is uncommon. They consist of cysts delimited by a fibrous capsule without cutaneous annexes and are lined by stratified squamous epithelium. The differential diagnosis includes ranula, dermoid cysts, and lingual thyroid. Despite their benign presentation, these cysts can cause functional limitations, requiring special clinical attention for extensive lesions located in regions that preserve vital structures. This paper aims to report a case of epidermoid cyst in patient with swallowing and breathing difficulty, highlighting the clinical and surgical planning.

Abstract Osseointegrated dental implants are inserted into the alveolar ridge, and for them to function as tooth replacements, the surrounding tissues need to adapt to them. Just as with teeth, dental implants traverse the oral mucosa and have access to the contaminated environment of the oral cavity. Therefore, periodontal and peri-implant tissues are important for establishing a protective barrier. The aim of the present study was to perform a histologic analysis of the mucosa surrounding osseointegrated implant cover screws. For this study, 17 mucosal specimens were obtained from 12 patients during the second surgical session for implant exposure to the oral environment. After histologic preparation, specimens were sectioned perpendicularly to the mucosal surface to a thickness of about 3 µm, stained with 1% toluidine blue, and examined under light microscopy. All specimens showed a keratinized, stratified, squamous epithelium with well-defined strata. In the lamina propria, unorganized dense connective tissue was noted in the reticular layer, and in 4 samples, a chronic inflammatory infiltrate was seen in this region. The papillary layer presented tall connective papillae consisting of loose connective tissue. The results of this study confirm the hypothesis that the mucosa that conceals osseointegrated implant cover screws has the same morphologic characteristics as the alveolar masticatory mucosa. Furthermore, clinical conditions of normality in peri-implant tissues may not coincide with situations of histologic normality.
