Internal hernias are an infrequent cause of intestinal obstruction with an incidence of 0.2-0.9%, therefore their early diagnosis represents a challenge. The most frequently herniated organ is the small bowel, which results in a wide spectrum of symptoms, varying from mild abdominal pain to acute abdomen. We present the case of an eight-year old patient with nonspecific digestive symptoms, a transoperative diagnosis was made in which an internal hernia was found strangulated by plastron in the distal third of the appendix. Appendectomy was performed and four days later the patient was discharged without complications.

2/3 of all diseases of the nervous system in children begin to develop in the perinatal period. In recent decades, great strides have been made in perinatal neurology in the development of criteria for early diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Further study of the biochemical foundations of perinatal lesions of the nervous system with the definition of objective markers of the severity of the lesion will reveal new links in its pathogenesis and develop more effective methods of treatment.

This is a book of particular value and interest to pediatricians, although written by an orthopedic surgeon. It explains concisely and graphically the early signs of hip dysplasia, as well as the need for early diagnosis and treatment. The use of the Frejka abduction pillow splint is advised when diagnosis can be made in the preweight bearing period; this method of therapy is almost always successful and easy to apply, in contrast to the discomfort of plaster casts and less favorable results obtained in older infants and children.

Abstract Lung cancer is one of the most leading causes of death throughout the world, and there is an urgent requirement for the precision medical management of it. Artificial intelligence (AI) consisting of numerous advanced techniques has been widely applied in the field of medical care. Meanwhile, radiomics based on traditional machine learning also does a great job in mining information through medical images. With the integration of AI and radiomics, great progress has been made in the early diagnosis, specific characterization, and prognosis of lung cancer, which has aroused attention all over the world. In this study, we give a brief review of the current application of AI and radiomics for precision medical management in lung cancer.

Background and aims – The intensive botanical prospections carried out in Gabon since the publication of the national checklist in 2006 have resulted in c. 34 300 new specimens (amounting to 30% of all collections made in the country) and an annual increase of 25 species in average. As a result, 5175 species of vascular plants are now recorded from Gabon, of which 650 are considered endemic. However, most of the recent discoveries have not yet been published. This paper is the first of a series documenting additions to the flora of Gabon, and new records of poorly known species. It concerns specifically new records from the Lower Ogooué Ramsar site, the third largest delta of Africa, and certainly the most intact, which includes 80% of the country’s wetlands and a wide variety of other habitats. Methods – The new records presented here come essentially from fieldwork conducted in Gabon between 2008 and 2016 by the authors and colleagues. Further information comes from the study of herbarium specimens in BR, BRLU, K, LBV, MO, P and WAG. For each species, information on distribution and ecology is given, and the studied Gabonese collections listed. In case of rare or range-restricted species, collections from other countries are also listed, and a distribution map is provided, as well as an evaluation of the conservation status based on the categories and criteria of the IUCN Red List.Key results – We report 18 additions to the flora of Gabon, including four genera new to the country (Capparis, Gisekia, Hoffmanniella and Leptochloa) and the first records of the neotropical Justicia secunda being naturalised in tropical Africa. New distribution records are also provided for 16 rare Gabonese endemics or near-endemics. Some species are also newly reported from Cameroon (Cissus leemansii, Salacia coronata) and Equatorial Guinea (Cissus leemansii, C. louisii, Lychnodiscus grandifolius, Placodiscus resendeanus, Rutidea gabonensis, Uvaria bipindensis). Two species, which were reported in the 2006 checklist based on misidentifications, are excluded from the Gabonese flora.

Breast cancer (BC) is the malignant neoplasm most associated with mortality among women in Ceará. Its survival rate is directly related to early diagnosis. Traditionally, this diagnosis is made after the self-detection of a nodule by the patient. Mammography screening covers 43% of the target population. The diagnosis is almost exclusively made in advanced stages, leading to high mortality (3735 deaths from 2013 to 2018). Raising awareness of the population is crucial to increase mammography coverage. The development of an application to refer suspected cases to a specialized care unit may increase the early diagnosis of the disease and improve its prognosis. The project consists of developing an application that directs women to get mammographies, increasing the care coverage, informing them about risk factors, helping them find reference centers, collecting data, and generating reports and predictions.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) research is progressing rapidly and on multiple fronts. Advances are being made in early diagnosis, neuroimaging, and biomarkers; optimal care uses currently available medications and strategies; and new therapies are emerging. Early diagnosis is necessary for optimal patient management. Biomarkers are critical to early diagnosis, and biomarker development is dependent on better understanding of disease pathophysiology (Slide 1). The discussions in this supplement examine how progress in AD research can be translated into clinical care.Primary care practitioners (PCPs) provide most of the care of patients with AD, and these clinicians are optimally poised to discover new cases emerging among elderly patients. Caregivers are most likely to voice concerns about declining memory in a family member to a PCP before seeking specialty evaluation. PCPs, however, have little time to devote to complex assessments and cannot have specialty-level expertise in all disorders. PCPs must have clinical tools that assist them in rapidly identifying potential problems and triaging them for further evaluation or specialty referral.
