In this paper, the effect of time synchronization error on protection algorithms are studied for the usage of the LAN-based collaborative protection. In order to derive the effect of time synchronization, this paper proposes a substation model which is constructed with IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) supported intelligent electronic devices. The proposed model is used as an example of a target platform to study the effect of time synchronization error with two typical substation protection algorithms, i.e., current differential-based substation protection and distance protection algorithms. From the analyzed and the simulated results, it was well observed that time synchronization error is a significant error-causing factor for both protection algorithms, resulting in erroneous detection of faults and erroneous estimation of fault distances, respectively. The results of research performed in this paper are expected to provide a good guide for constructing the future LAN-based digital power substation with precise time synchronization.

In order to meet the real-time demands of some equipment networked test, the time synchronization techniques of ATS based traditional instrument buses are compared with the techniques of LXI ATS. Accordingly，the necessity of LXI ATS time synchronization technique study is put forward. The sorts of time synchronization techniques based on Local Area Network are analyzed. In addition, some methods which could improve the level of LXI data real-time communications are presented. Afterwards, technique realizations of PTP are studied in detail. Local Area Network techniques and IEEE 1588 Precise Time Protocol are adopted in the LXI Automatic Test System which designed in the paper, and the level of time synchronization precision in the system is improved.

The spatial ubiquity and the huge number of employed nodes monitoring the surroundings, individuals, and devices makes security a key challenge in IoT. Serious security apprehensions are evolving in terms of data authenticity, integrity, and confidentiality. Consequently, IoT requires security to be assured down to the hardware level, as the authenticity and the integrity need to be guaranteed in terms of the hardware implementation of each IoT node. Physically unclonable functions recreate the keys only while the chip is being powered on, replacing the conventional key storage which requires storing information. Compared to extrinsic key storage, they are able to generate intrinsic keys and are far less susceptible against physical attacks. Physically unclonable functions have drawn considerable attention due to their ability to economically introduce hardware-level security into individual silicon dice. This chapter introduces the notion of physically unclonable functions, their scenarios for hardware security in IoT devices, and their interaction with traditional cryptography.
