Abstract TATMO-V is a high-speed tool steel with superior abrasion resistance because of its high contents of carbon and vanadium. It is an excellent choice for premium grade tools which require an outstanding balance of red hardness, edge toughness, and wear resistance. Increased tool life of Tatmo-V is noted in the machining of semi-hard, heat-treated steel pats (300-350 Brinell). This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, and elasticity as well as fracture toughness. It also includes information on forming, heat treating, and machining. In this article, the analysis of the acoustic path during the ultrasonic pulse echo testing of the rail head in production is carried out. The influence of the parameters of the applied piezoelectric transducers on the distribution of sensitivity for the sounding scheme used in the existing installations is estimated and the real sensitivity of detecting defects of the «non-metallic inclusion» type is estimated.

Sub-zero treatment of Vanadis 6 steel resulted in a considerable reduction of retained austenite amount, refinement of martensite, enhancement of population density of carbides, and modification of precipitation behaviour. Tempering of sub-zero-treated steel led to a decrease in population density of carbides, to a further reduction of retained austenite, and to precipitation of M3C carbides, while M7C3 carbides precipitated only in the case of conventionally quenched steel. Complementary effects of these microstructural variations resulted in more noble behaviour of sub-zero-treated steel compared to the conventionally room-quenched one, and to clear inhibition of the corrosion rate at the same time.

The transverse properties were inferior to the longitudinal properties for the existence of banded structure in 20G steel. In order to eliminate the banded structure and improve the transverse performance of 20G steel, different heat treatment processes were adopted. The results showed that conventional normalizing could reduce the banded structure and refine the grain sizes. When 20G was heated with 10°C/min heating rated and then held at 920°C for 2h, the banded structure in the steel was almost eliminated and the microstructure was homogeneous with fine grain size, the strength increased by 14%. The non-metallic inclusion and carbide in the microstructure leaded to stress concentration and separation with the base metal. To some extent, heat treatment can improve the distribution and form of non-metallic inclusions.
