Vanadium extration is a significant process to improve the additional value of vanadium-bearing molten iron. This article carried out the experiments of blowing oxygen and smelting on V extration from vanadium-bearing molten iron, which is made from vanadium titanium magnetite by the process of non-blast furnace. The different controlling parameters including the reaction time, temperature and inserting depths of oxygen lance, are studied aiming to increase the rate of V extraction. The thermodynamics calculation is performed during the process. The results show that, the appropriate blowing time is 9 mins, and the end-point temperature of molten pool should be ranged of 1360-1395 °C. Moreover, the larger inserting depth is beneficial to the V extraction. The oxidation patterns of the smelting process are discussed.

In this study, the feasibility of the carburization of vanadium-bearing hot metal was first investigated by thermodynamic analysis. Next, three carburizers, namely a low-nitrogen carburizer, anthracite, and coke, were used for carburization of 500 g of vanadium-bearing hot metal at 1450 °C, 1500 °C, and 1550 °C, respectively. The carbon increments for the low-nitrogen carburizer, anthracite and coke followed decreasing order in the temperature range from 1450 °C to 1550 °C. Anthracite was the most cost-effective carburizer. Hence, anthracite is used in pilot-scale experiments of the vanadium-bearing hot metal (100 kg and 200 kg). Finally, vanadium extraction experiments of the vanadium-bearing hot metal were carried out in a top-bottom-combined blowing induction furnace. It is proved that the average superheat degree of semi-steel increases from 100 °C to 198 °C by the carburization of vanadium-containing hot metal.

The metallurgical characteristics of pellets (reducibility, strength after reaction, softening start and end temperatures), phase composition (X-ray phase analysis), and porosity were studied. Blast furnace smelting parameters were calculated using laboratory pellets with different basicities and degrees of metallization. Pellets were obtained from complex titanium-magnetite ores. The vanadium extraction of this ore into metal did not exceed 10 % during smelting of metallized pellets in an arc steelmaking furnace, but special techniques could raise this to 85 %. According to calculations from the Institute of Metallurgy of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IMET UB RAS), vanadium extraction up to 80–90 % can be achieved by using high-base and partially metallized pellets. The influence of changes in the composition and metallurgical characteristics of titanomagnetite pellets with increasing basicity (especially relative to strength after reduction) should be taken into account.
