In this contribution we present updates on the taxonomy and morphology of the South American species of Amitermes. Two new species are described: Amitermes bandeirai, sp. n., from Brazil, and Amitermes lilloi, sp. n., from Argentina. Amitermes nordestinus is a junior synonym of Amitermes aporema. The imago of A. aporema is described for the first time. Detailed comparative gut anatomy of the eight species is presented for the first time. The geographic distribution of Amitermes in South America is expanded and the distribution patterns of some species are discussed.

The genus Protothereva Malloch, 1932, was described based on a single female from southwestern Argentina. The genus is revised with the description of two new species, P. ecuadorensis Webb from Ecuador and P. peruensisWebb from Peru, represented by both male and female specimens. A key to the identification of the species is included along with illustrations of the genitalia and a map of the species distributions. The genus Protothereva is redefined to include the male characteristics.

The taxonomy of the South American termite genus Cyrilliotermes Fontes, 1985 is revised, including an identification keyto soldiers and distribution maps for all species. Two new species are described: C. brevidens and C. crassinasus, bothfrom southeastern Brazil. C. cashassa Fontes, 1985 and C. jaci Fontes, 1985 are both designated as junior synonyms ofC. angulariceps (Mathews, 1977), and C. cupim Fontes, 1985 is designated as a junior synonym of C. strictinasus (Mathews, 1977). An updated diagnosis for the genus is presented, including gut morphology. All species are illustrated.

The descriptions and illustrations of two new species of Podonomus, P. tehuelche and P. quinquesetosus are presented. Both species belong to the Brundin’s decarthrus group and were collected in an "orogenic island", representing the first record of a named Podonomus species from Argentina outside the Andean-Patagonian region. Immatures and adults were collected at relatively low altitude for the genus (500 to 800 m a.s.l.). A key for the South American male adults and pupae of the decarthrus group is presented.

Two new species of the South American genus Lessingianthus (Asteraceae: Vernonieae) are described and illustrated. One of these species, Lessingianthus arctatus, bears a resemblance to L. linearis (Spreng.) H.Rob. and L. rosmarinifolius (Less.) H.Rob., but can be separated from them by its almost glabrous phyllaries, solitary heads and longer internodes. The other new taxon, Lessingianthus longicuspis, can be easily separated from L. cataractarum (Hieron.) H.Rob. and L. bardanoides (Less.) H.Rob., and other taxa of the genus, by the combination of petiolate leaves, aristate phyllaries and inflorescence bracts alternate to the heads. Four other taxa previously included in Vernonia are transferred to the genus Lessingianthus.

A synopsis of the South American species of Sangaris Dalman, 1823 is presented. Sangaris luteonotata Monné & Monné sp. nov. and S. ordinale Monné & Monné sp. nov. are described from Ecuador. Sangaris luctuosa (Pascoe, 1859) comb. nov. and Sangaris obtusicarinata (Zajciw, 1962) comb. nov. are transferred from Colobothea Lepeletier & Audinet-Serville, 1825. New distributional data are given for S. trifasciata Melzer, 1928, S. zikani Melzer, 1931, and S. luctuosa (Pascoe, 1859). A key to the South American species is provided.
