A method for the synthesis of cyclic 3-aryl- and heteroaryl-substituted 1,2-dicarbonyl compounds with different ring sizes by using a Suzuki cross-coupling reaction between 3-halo-1,2-dicarbonyl compounds and arylboronic acids is developed. The 3-halo-1,2-dicarbonyl substrates are easily available from 1,2-dicarbonyl compounds. The method is versatile, affording good to high yields of the target compounds.

Recent years have witnessed a significant advancement in the field of radical oxidative coupling of ketones towards the synthesis of highly useful synthetic building blocks, such as 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds, and biologically important heterocyclic and carbocyclic compounds. Besides oxidative homo- and cross-coupling of enolates, other powerful methods involving direct C(sp3)–H functionalizations of ketones­ have emerged towards the synthesis of 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds. Moreover, direct α-C–H functionalization of ketones has also allowed an efficient access to carbocycles and heterocycles. The intramolecular C(sp3)–H/C(sp2)–H cross-coupling of 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds has been achieved through Cp2Fe-catalyzed electrochemical oxidation.
