Water at the supercritical state is a new process for the chemical recycling. At this thermodynamic state i.e. Pc = 218 atmospheres and Tc = 374oC , water behaves very differently from its everyday temperament and it is a very good solvent for organic components. Experimental studies show that supercritical water can decompose hydrocarbons/polymers and produce useful products like 2-Azacyclotridecanone /lactam-1 from Nylon-12 (batch process). The decomposition process itself was carried out in batch reaction system in order to get more information about product distributions, time dependence, and scale-up possibilities.Keywords: supercritical water, decomposition, batch, polymer, hydrocarbon

Terminal Island Treatment Plant converted its digesters to thermophilic operation with the objective to comply with the U.S. EPA Part 503 Biosolids Rule requirements for Class A biosolids. The following processes were tested: a) single-stage continuous; b) two-stage continuous; c) single-stage sequencing batch. Salmonella sp. were always non-detect in digester outflows (<3 MPN/4 g dry wt), whereas fecal coliform densities were usually below the Class A limit of 1000 MPN/g dry wt. However, the recurrence of fecal coliforms in post-digestion caused non-compliance with the Class A limit at the truck loading facility as the last point of plant control for compliance. After several design modifications of the post-digestion train, operation of the digesters as sequencing batch digesters according to the time-temperature requirement of Alternative 1 of the Part 503 Biosolids Rule achieved compliance for both Salmonella sp. and fecal coliforms at the last point of plant control (truck loading facility).

Objective: Biosurfactants are the surface active agents which are used for the reduction of surface and interfacial tensions of liquids. Rhamnolipids are the surfactants produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It requires minimum nutrition for its growth as it can also grow in distilled water. The rhamnolipids produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa are extra-cellular glycolipids consisting of L-rhamnose and 3-hydroxyalkanoic acid. Methods: The fed-batch method for the rhamnolipid production is considered in this study to know the influence of the carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous substrates as growth-limiting nutrients. Pulse feeding is employed for limiting nutrient addition at particular time interval to obtain maximum rhamnolipid formation from Pseudomonas aeruginosa compared with the batch process. Results: Out of 3 fed batch strategies constant glucose fed batch strategy shows best and gave maximum rhamnolipid concentration of 0.134 g/l.

Background: Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) is commonly processed into 3 products for different clinical applications. However, a simple analytical method for quality control has rarely been reported to quickly estimate the degree of processing Huangqin or distinguish differently processed products or unqualified Huangqin products. Objective: To study a new strategy for quality control in the processing practice of Huangqin. Methods: Seven kinds of flavonoids that mainly exist in Huangqin were determined by HPLC-DAD. Chromatographic fingerprints were established to study the variation and discipline of the 3 processed products of Huangqin. PCA and OPLS-DA were used to classify differently processed products of Huangqin. Results: The results showed that baicalin and wogonoside were the main components in the crude and the alcohol Huangqin herb while baicalein and wogonin mainly existed in carbonized Huangqin. The results of mathematical statistics revealed that the processing techniques can make the quality of medicinal materials more uniform. Conclusion: This multivariate monitoring strategy is suitable for quality control in the processing of Huangqin.

AbstractA key challenge to advance the efficiency of bioprocesses is the uncoupling of biomass from product formation, as biomass represents a by-product that is in most cases difficult to recycle efficiently. Using the example of rhamnolipid biosurfactants, a temperature-sensitive heterologous production system under translation control of a fourU RNA thermometer from Salmonella was established to allow separating phases of preferred growth from product formation. Rhamnolipids as bulk chemicals represent a model system for future processes of industrial biotechnology and are therefore tied to the efficiency requirements in competition with the chemical industry. Experimental data confirms function of the RNA thermometer and suggests a major effect of temperature on specific rhamnolipid production rates with an increase of the average production rate by a factor of 11 between 25 and 38 °C, while the major part of this increase is attributable to the regulatory effect of the RNA thermometer rather than an unspecific overall increase in bacterial metabolism. The production capacity of the developed temperature sensitive-system was evaluated in a simple batch process driven by a temperature switch. Product formation was evaluated by efficiency parameters and yields, confirming increased product formation rates and product-per-biomass yields compared to a high titer heterologous rhamnolipid production process from literature.

Troubleshooting batch processes at a plant-wide level requires first finding the unit causing the fault, and then understanding why the fault occurs in that unit. Whereas in the literature case studies discussing the latter issue abound, little attention has been given so far to the former, which is complex for several reasons: the processing units are often operated in a non-sequential way, with unusual series-parallel arrangements; holding vessels may be required to compensate for lack of production capacity, and reacting phenomena can occur in these vessels; and the evidence of batch abnormality may be available only from the end unit and at the end of the production cycle. We propose a structured methodology to assist the troubleshooting of plant-wide batch processes in data-rich environments where multivariate statistical techniques can be exploited. Namely, we first analyze the last unit wherein the fault manifests itself, and we then step back across the units through the process flow diagram (according to the manufacturing recipe) until the fault cannot be detected by the available field sensors any more. That enables us to isolate the unit wherefrom the fault originates. Interrogation of multivariate statistical models for that unit coupled to engineering judgement allow identifying the most likely root cause of the fault. We apply the proposed methodology to troubleshoot a complex industrial batch process that manufactures a specialty chemical, where productivity was originally limited by unexplained variability of the final product quality. Correction of the fault allowed for a significant increase in productivity.
