Little is known about how retinoic acid (RA) synthesis, utilization and metabolism are regulated in the embryonic lung and how these activities relate to lung pattern formation. Here we report that early lung bud formation and subsequent branching morphogenesis are characterized by distinct stages of RA signaling. At the onset of lung development RA signaling is ubiquitously activated in primary buds, as shown by expression of the major RA-synthesizing enzyme, RALDH-2 and activation of a RARE-lacZ transgene. Nevertheless, further airway branching appears to require downregulation of RA pathways by decreased synthesis, increased RA degradation in the epithelium via P450RAI-mediated metabolism, and inhibition of RA signaling in the mesenchyme by COUPTF-II expression. These mechanisms controlling local RA signaling may be critical for normal branching, since we show that manipulating RA levels in vitro to maintain RA signaling activated as in the initial stage, leads to an immature lung phenotype characterized by failure to form typical distal buds. We show that this phenotype likely results from RA interfering with the establishment of a distal signaling center, altering levels and distribution of Fgf10 and Bmp4, genes that are essential for distal lung formation. Furthermore, RA upregulates P450RAI expression, suggesting the presence of feedback mechanisms controlling RA availability. Our study illustrates the importance of regional mechanisms that control RA availability and utilization for correct expression of pattern regulators and normal morphogenesis during lung development.

The controversy over the proper expression for the theoretical maximum conversion efficiency of solar devices is resolved. The correct expression, ηmax = 1 −4/3 (To/Ts), relates to the maximum work that can be done by a device which accepts blackbody radiation at Ts and rejects heat to the ambient at To. A general bilinear dissipation equation for solar devices is derived. The effect of back-radiation is considered, and the efficiency decrease due to atmospheric scattering is determined.

The exponential factor in Equation (1) of the paper published in Materials [1] reports a misprint and the correct expression of the transmission function is (1) T ˜ ( ω ) = E ˜ f ( ω ) E ˜ s ( ω ) = 2 n ˜ f ( n ˜ a + n ˜ s ) ( n ˜ f + n ˜ a ) ( n ˜ f + n ˜ s ) e x p { −   i   ( n ˜ f − n ˜ a ) ω t c } F P ( ω ) where F P ( ω ) = 1 1 − ( n ˜ f − n ˜ a n ˜ f + n ˜ a ) ( n ˜ f − n ˜ s n ˜ f + n ˜ s ) e x p { − i   2   n ˜ f ω t c } [...]

It is shown that the expression for the moment of inertia used in the governor model calculations is incorrect. A correct expression for the moment of inertia is derived from first principles and is found to differ from the earlier, approximately by a factor of 1/2. This introduces a significant correction in the calculation of the number of nucleons outside the rotationally invariant core and the possible closed shell configuration given by Trainor and Gupta.

The proof of Corollary 4⋅3 in our paper [1] is not correct because there is a mistake in the expression given for ∥X* ∧ Y*∥2 on page 374. In fact, the correct expression for this term is \begin{eqnarray*} \norm{X^*\wedge Y^*}^2 & = & \norm{X^*}^2\norm{Y^*}^2-\pair{X^*,Y^*}^2\\ {} & = & 1+\pair{X,T}^2+\pair{Y,T}^2\geq 1, \end{eqnarray*} and then the inequality (4⋅9) is no longer true. Observe that all the previous reasoning before the wrong expression for ∥X* ∧ Y*∥2 is correct.

Act3p/Arp4, an essential actin-related protein ofSaccharomyces cerevisiae located within the nucleus, is, according to genetic data, involved in transcriptional regulation. In addition to the basal core structure of the actin family members, which is responsible for ATPase activity, Act3p possesses two insertions, insertions I and II, the latter of which is predicted to form a loop-like structure protruding from beyond the surface of the molecule. Because Act3p is a constituent of chromatin but itself does not bind to DNA, we hypothesized that insertion II might be responsible for an Act3p-specific function through its interaction with some other chromatin protein. Far Western blot and two-hybrid analyses revealed the ability of insertion II to bind to each of the core histones, although with somewhat different affinities. Together with our finding of coimmunoprecipitation of Act3p with histone H2A, this suggests the in vivo existence of a protein complex required for correct expression of particular genes. We also show that a conditionalact3 mutation affects chromatin structure of an episomal DNA molecule, indicating that the putative Act3p complex may be involved in the establishment, remodeling, or maintenance of chromatin structures.

G protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) translate the actions of hormones and neurotransmitters into intracellular signalling events. Mutations in GPCRs can prevent their correct expression and trafficking to the cell surface and cause disease. Single cell subcellular localisation measurements reveal that while some cells appear to traffic the majority of the vasopressin 2 receptor (V2R) molecules to the cell surface, others retain a greater number of receptors in the ER or have approximately equal distribution. Mutations in the V2R affect the proportion of cells able to send this GPCR to their cell surface but surprisingly they do not prevent all cells from correctly trafficking the mutant receptors. These findings reveal the potential for rescue of mutant receptor cell surface expression by pharmacological manipulation of the GPCR folding and trafficking machinery.

The purpose of this study is to determine the role of language clichés in the practice of teaching foreign languages and, in particular, Russian as a foreign language. In the course of the study, the relevant features of language clichés were identified, including those that distinguish them from phraseological units; the classification of language clichés by the functions of language expressions is made; and the methodology for them in relation to a foreign audience is described. In addition, it was found that the use of clichés as the most stable reproducible linguistic terms in a foreign language, helps to avoid errors associated with the wrong lexical collocation, and also contributes to a more correct expression of thoughts for a given language which in turn makes the communication more effective and responsive to the communicative tasks of its participants. In this regard, language clichés should be paid a special attention, both by researchers and teachers, in this case working with foreigners. It should be kept in mind that there might be no such fixed phrases in the language of foreign students, or they can have a different structure, which means that in many times students cannot independently recognize and purposefully memorize such units; that is why all the necessary semantic work with such language clichés should be carried out in class.
