A 3 T superconducting magnet has been designed and constructed for magnetic Compton-profile (MCP) measurements with the new capabilities that the magnetic field direction can be altered quickly (within 5 s) and liquid-He refill is not required for more than one week. For the latter capability, two refrigerators have been directly attached to the cryostat to maintain the low temperature of the radiation shields and for the recondensation of liquid He. The system has been satisfactorily operated for over one week.

AbstractFour new Ln(III)-based coordination polymers (CPs), [Eu(HL)Cl2(DMF)2]·(H2L) (1), [Dy(HL)Cl2(DMF)2]·(H2L) (2), [Er(HL)Cl2(DMF)(CH3OH)]·(DMF) (3) and [Yb(HL)Cl2(DMF)(H2O)]·(DMF) (4) (H2L=2,6-bis[(3-methoxysalicylidene)hydrazinocarbonyl]pyridine) have been synthesized through the reaction of Ln(III) chloride and H2L by using the vapour diffusion method. Interestingly, Cl−as a template agent plays a vital role in the formation of the target complexes. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies indicate that1and2are isostructural and crystallize in triclinic space groupP1̅, while complexes3and4are isostructural and crystallize in monoclinic space groupC2/c. Variable temperature magnetization measurement (χMT–T) demonstrates possible antiferromagnetic interactions in complex2. Alternating-current (ac) susceptibility measurement furthermore indicated frequency dependence for both the in-phase (χ′) and out-of-phase (χ″) components in2, suggesting that there is a slow relaxation behavior of the magnetization, which is typical of single-molecule magnets (SMMs). This is the first time that Ln(III) CPs based on such a dihydrazone ligand has been reported so far.

Directed spiral percolation (DSP) is a new percolation model with crossed external bias fields. Since percolation is a model of disorder, the effect of external bias fields on the properties of disordered systems can be studied numerically using DSP. In DSP, the bias fields are an in-plane directional field (E) and a field of rotational nature (B) applied perpendicular to the plane of the lattice. The critical properties of DSP clusters are studied here varying the direction of E field and intensities of both E and B fields in two-dimensions. The system shows interesting and unusual critical behavior at the percolation threshold. Not only the DSP model is found to belong in a new universality class compared to that of other percolation models but also the universality class remains invariant under the variation of E field direction. Varying the intensities of the E and B fields, a crossover from DSP to other percolation models has been studied. A phase diagram of the percolation models is obtained as a function of intensities of the bias fields E and B.
