Ultrafine MoSe2 nanodots were prepared by polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-assisted liquid phase exfoliation, which were further applied as efficient light-absorbing agent for photothermal therapy with negligible cell toxicity and appreciable photothermal effect.
