Detonation waves will bypass a wave shaper and propagate in the form of a horn wave in shaped charge. Horn waves can reduce the incidence angle of a detonation wave on a liner surface and collide with each other at the charge axis to form overdriven detonation. Detection electronic components of small-caliber terminal sensitive projectile that are limited by space are often placed inside a wave shaper, which will cause the wave shaper to no longer be uniform and dense, and weaken the ability to adjust detonation waves. In this article, we design a double-layer shaped charge (DLSC) with a high-detonation-velocity explosive in the outer layer and low-detonation-velocity explosive in the inner layer. Numerical and experimental simulation are combined to compare and analyze the forming process and penetration performance of explosively formed projectile (EFP) in DLSC and ordinary shaped charge (OSC). The results show that, compared with OSC, DLSC can also adjust and optimize the shape of the detonation wave when the wave shaper performance is poor. DLSC can obtain long rod EFPs with a large length-diameter ratio, which greatly improves the penetration performance of EFP.

Abstract The ordinary shaped charge has a low kill-radius because of its structure. In order to adapt to the different battlefields, this paper proposed the double-layer sub-caliber shaped charge, which is modified from an ordinary shaped charge with insensitive explosive appended to its outer layer. In this paper, a study of the Ø56 mm shaped charge was conducted as a benchmark case. The simulations were carried out using AUTODYN for jet formation and penetration of different axial thicknesses of additional insensitive explosive and the additional height of the charge, with the aim to obtain the optimal size of double-layer sub-caliber shaped charge. The results show that the optimum axial thickness of additional insensitive explosive is ΔR/R0 = 0.8, and the optimum size of the additional height of charge is ΔL/L0 = 0.4.

An analysis of the penetration–explosion (PE) effects of four distributions of inactive/active composite jets shows that a well-designed inactive/active double-layer liner can promote composite jet damage. Penetration experiments were then carried out for shaped charge jets having a single inactive (Cu) liner or an inactive/active (Cu/Al) double-layer liner with variable liner height. The behaviors and firelight patterns of the different jets were captured by high-speed photography. The perforation, deformation area, and deflection were measured for each plate, showing that the Cu/Al jets have stronger PE effects. Numerical simulation shows that the tip of the composite jet generated from the full-height liner is only Cu, whereas for the other jet, from the double-layer liner, Cu is almost wrapped entirely by Al.
