Population registers are recognised to be a very important source for demographic research, because it enables us to study the lifecourse of individuals as well as households. A very good technique for lifecourse analysis is event history analysis. Unfortunately, there are marked differences in the way the data are available in population registers and the way event history analysis expects them to be. The source-oriented approach of computing historical data calls for a ‘five-file structure’, whereas event history analysis only can handle fiat files. In this article, we suggest a series of twelve steps with which population register data can be transposed from a five-file structured database into a ‘flat file’ event history analysis dataset.

AbstractThe compilation and maintenance of experimental databases are of crucial importance in all research fields, allowing for researchers to develop and test new methodologies. In this work, we present a flat-file database of experimental dispersion curves and shear wave velocity profiles, mainly from active surface wave testing, but including also data from passive surface wave testing and invasive methods. The Polito Surface Wave flat-file Database (PSWD) is a gathering of experimental measurements collected within the past 25 years at different Italian sites. Discussion on the database content is reported in this paper to evaluate some statistical properties of surface wave test results. Comparisons with other methods for shear wave velocity measurements are also considered. The main novelty of this work is the homogeneity of the PSWD in terms of processing and interpretation methods. A common processing strategy and a new inversion approach were applied to all the data in the PSWD to guarantee consistency. The PSWD can be useful for further correlation studies and is made available as a reference benchmark for the validation and verification of novel interpretation procedures by other researchers.

This chapter discusses the data extraction process, meta-analysis database, and critical appraisal of data. The efficient and accurate extraction of data from primary studies is an important component of successful research reviews. It is one of the most time-consuming parts of a research review and should be approached with the goal of repeatability and transparency of results. Careful definition of the research question and identification of the effect size metric(s) to be used are prerequisites to efficient data extraction. The extraction spreadsheet may simply be appended to a growing database stored in a single spreadsheet (also known as “flat file database”) (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Lotus, Quattro Pro), but it may be advantageous to develop relational databases (e.g., by using Microsoft Access, Paradox or dBase software), particularly for large or complex data. During the process of data extraction the investigator also has an opportunity for critical appraisal of data quality. One approach to quantitative assessment of study quality has been the use of numerical scales in which points are assigned to specific elements of the study and summed to produce an overall quality score.
