This article investigates the individual competences of project managers through a methodological approach that combines a systematic literature review and an analysis of employment opportunities. A comparative analysis of project manager’s competences from the literature and the job advertisements was done. The systematic literature review was the first stage of the research and consisted of adopting methods of bibliometrics and content analysis. The second stage included an analysis of project managers’ competences in the selection process. Thus, five Brazilian recruitment websites and the selection of employees were investigated. Through literature review, it was possible to classify and code competences in four categories (contextual, managerial, technical, and behavioral). The analysis of job advertisements allowed us to identify core competence requirements in the job descriptions and to develop a project manager profile expected by Brazilian organizations.

Currently, rapid economic development successful implementation of projects is necessary for the activities of organizations. In some industries, such as construction, spacecraft production, film production and other, activities are carried out mainly through projects where a failed project can have a large negative impact on such organizations. The study based on the scientific work of the British research group BMG and the results of a survey of project managers in the Skolkovo Innovation Center, allowed to identify and compare the most important factors affecting the successful implementation of projects in the EU and Russia.

Purpose The study aims to introduce two new models of project scheduling by incorporating potential quality loss cost (PQLC) in time–cost tradeoff problems by overcoming the drawbacks of the existing Kim, Khang and Hwang (KKH) model. The proposed methods are named the Revised KKH-I (RKKH-I) and Revised KKH-II (RKKH-II) models for project scheduling. Design/methodology/approach The performance of the existing KKH model has been tested using a numerical example followed by the identification of the main shortcomings of the KKH method. Later, a concrete effort has been made to address its shortcomings while improving its performance significantly. The comparative analysis of the Revised KKH models with the original model has also been presented along with sensitivity analyses. Findings The study recognizes that the construct on which the original KKH method was built is important; however, certain drawbacks make it unable to consider PQLC in projects, thus making its practical use questionable. The comparative analysis of the proposed methodology with the original method demonstrated that the new models (RKHH-I and II) are more comprehensive and intelligent than the existing KKH model. Originality/value The comparative analysis of the original KKH model and its improved version reveals that the revised model is far more suitable for project scheduling. The study is important for project managers who recognize project scheduling being one of the key parameters associated with project management process, crucial to control every day during the management of projects.

This research examines renewable energy (RE) project manager competencies required by USA labor market using the analyses of project manager Internet job advertisements. It was realized by collecting and coding the requirements from the job advertisements in April 2017. 1500 vacancies were found by the website, but only 150 of them were relevant for this work (they were filtered according to some formal criteria). From the data obtained from advertisement analyses, the pool of job candidate’s competencies required by the market was compiled. The most common requirements were compared with IPMA and SOVNET competency standards for project managers. The research shows that companies are seeking a candidate with bachelor degree in engineering, project management and specific sectorial certificates, 6 years of professional experience related to project management. Some competencies coincide with the standards and the other are referred to specific RE skills.

Project success, which is critical to achieve, requires a competent project manager. Could anybody become a skilled project manager, or what does it take? One factor that is considered to influence the opportunities of succeeding is individuals' personality traits. Which ones would be suitable for Swedish IT project managers then? Could these be mirrored in the perspective of the Big five categories? This research was carried out by collecting and analyzing job advertisements (henceforth ads.) once a year (2010-2013), in total 325 ads. The findings indicate that the three most requested personality traits for a Swedish IT project manager are driven, communicative and structured. Mirrored in the Big five dimensions the most requested traits from the study fell into the categories conscientiousness and extraversion. The practical implication is improved ads. by using the Big five categories; research implications are foremost yet another perspective of IT project managers' personality traits.

This study investigated the relationship between “profession” and personal values to explain the potential conflicts between various groups of construction stakeholders. In this study, personal values of three professional groups of project consultants including architects, engineers, and quantity surveyors were assessed through questionnaire survey in the Malaysian construction industry. Using comparative analysis, the personal value priorities and conflicts between these professional groups of stakeholders were identified. The research findings indicated dissimilar patterns of personal values which explain potential conflicts between the stakeholders with different professions in the Malaysian construction industry. Therefore, this research confirmed the predictor role of “profession” variable in explaining personal values although this relationship was an ambiguous issue in the extant literature. This research, through identifying the value priorities of different groups of construction stakeholders, provides better understanding of their different needs, expectations, and preferences which would help project managers to have better perception of the potential conflicts between these groups of construction stakeholders.
