In this work, we present the possibility to reduce the amount of fluoride ions in silica gelwaste by using different techniques or to immobilize these ions by creating products ofcommercial value. The leaching of fluoride ions from silica gel waste to the liquid medium wasdone under static and dynamic conditions. It was determined that the removal of fluoride ionsfrom this compound depends on various factors, such as dissociation, solubility, the w/s ratio, reaction temperature, leaching conditions, the adsorption properties of silica gel waste, and others. The obtained results showed that, by applying different techniques, the quantity of fluoride ionscan be reduced by 60%, while obtained water was neutralized by calcium hydroxide.Additionally, it was determined that silica gel waste is a promising raw material for thehydrothermal synthesis of a stable compound containing fluoride ions – cuspidine.

An ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydroxide ([Bmim]OH) was grafted on silica gel by post-grafting method. Such grafted ionic liquids (GILs) which were verified by means of FTIR, element analysis N2adsorption-desorption and TG could be used as highly effective heterogeneous catalysts toward propylene carbonate synthesis through cycloaddition of carbon dioxide with propylene oxide under solventless and mild conditions.

Catalysts containing tungsten or molybdenum in the form of Keggin type heteropolyacids, like H3PW12O40, H4SiW12O40 and H3PMo12O40, supported on silica gel were prepared. The acid and surface properties of heteropolyacids and their supported forms are discussed. Keggin type heteropolyacids supported on silica gel have been found active for propene metathesis, the activity was compared with those of the classical catalyst WO3/SiO2. The highest activity and selectivity for studied reaction showed catalyst prepared on the base of H3PW12O40.

An ionic liquid 1- (triethoxysilyl) propyl-3-methylimidazolium hydroxide ([Smim]OH) was grafted on three kinds of mesoporous hydrophobic silica gel by means of post-grafting under mild conditions. The catalysts were [Smim]OH/SiO2-MTES (methyltriethoxysilane), [Smim]OH/SiO2-TMCS (trimethylchlorosilane), [Smim]OH/SiO2-CPTEO (triethoxysilyl propyl chloride). Such grafted ionic liquids (GILs), which were characterized by means of FTIR and N2 adsorption-desorption could be used as effective heterogeneous catalysts toward propylene carbonate synthesis through cycloaddition of carbon dioxide with propylene oxide under solventless and mild conditions.
