AbstractThe starch/natural rubber composite was prepared by blending the modified starch by esterification with natural rubber latex. The modified starch particles are homogenously distributed throughout the natural rubber (NR) matrix. In comparison with the host NR, the thermal stability of composite is significantly improved. The thermal degradation temperatures (T) and reaction activation energy (E) of composite are higher than those of the pure NR. The hardness, stress at 500%, tensile strength, permanent deformation and tear strength of composite increase linearly with the increment of dosage of modified starch.

The oyster shell powder/natural rubber composites were successfully prepared by blending the modified oyster shell powder with natural rubber (NR). The oyster shell powder with a particle size of 209 nm were well distributed within the rubber matrix. The characteristic Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) absorption bands of both oyster shell powder and natural rubber were observed in the FTIR spectra of NR/oyster shell powder composites. The C-O absorption bands in carbonates of composites exhibit a shift from 1425 cm−1 to 1446 cm−1 which suggests the bonds formed among oyster shell powder, earth coupling agent and NR. The tensile strength and stress at 500% elongation increased with rising of the earth coupling agent. Composites with 1.5 parts per hundred rubber (phr) coupling agent achieved the highest mechanical properties, where an increase of 13.4% in tensile strength was found. The tensile strength and tear strength increased along with an increment of oyster shell powder. When the content of oyster shell powder attained 25–30 phr, the composites exhibited the best mechanical properties. In particular, the tensile strength and tear strength increased by 27.9% and 17.2% when compared with those of the control samples. Furthermore, the addition of the oyster shell powder leads to the improvement of thermal stability which is evidenced by an increase of 8 °C in the initial degradation temperature. The improvement of the mechanical properties and thermal stability of the composites have demonstrated that the oyster shell powder can be used as potential fillers for natural rubber.

Thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) based on epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) and polypropylene (PP) were prepared in an internal mixer at 180°C. The effects of curing systems (i.e., sulfur and peroxide) on morphological, rheological, thermal and mechanical properties were studied. It is found that the sulfur cured TPVs show higher tensile strength, tear strength and elongation at break than those cured with the DCP systems. The rheological analysis indicates that TPVs cured with DCP system show lower apparent shear viscosity than those with sulfur system. SEM studies show that TPVs vulcanized with DCP system exhibit smaller and finely dispersed rubber domains, which provides it higher thermal stability than sulfur cured TPVs.

Monomeric antioxidants are widely used as effective antioxidants to protect polymers against thermal oxidation. Low molecular weight antioxidants are easily lost from polymer through migration, evaporation, and extraction. Physical loss of antioxidants is considered to be major concern in the environmental issues and safety regulation as well as long life time of polymers. The grafting copolymerization of natural rubber ando-aminophenol was carried out by using two-roll mill machine. The prepared natural rubber-graft-o-Aminophenol, NR-graft-o-AP, was analysed by using Infrared and1-NMR Spectroscopy techniques. The thermal stability, mechanical properties, and ultrasonic attenuation coefficient were evaluated for NBR vulcanizates containing the commercial antioxidant, N-phenyl--naphthylamine (PBN), the prepared grafted antioxidant, NR-graft-o-AP, and the control vulcanizate. Results of the thermal stability showed that the prepared NR-graft-o-AP can protect NBR vulcanizate against thermal treatment much better than the commercial antioxidant, PBN, and control mix, respectively. The prepared grafted antioxidant improves the mechanical properties of NBR vulcanizate.

Epoxidized natural rubber (ENR)/multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites were prepared via in situ epoxidation of natural rubber (NR) using a molar ratio of formic acid/hydrogen peroxide to isoprene unit at 0.75/0.75 with five loadings of MWCNTs, ranging from 0.5–2.5 parts per hundred parts of rubber (phr), at 50°C for 4 h. Based on Fourier transform infrared spectra, the epoxide content of ENR in the nanocomposites was about 32.5–33.2 mole%. Accordingly, the products were referred to ENR30/MWCNT nanocomposites. The curing characteristics, mechanical properties (tensile properties, tear strength, and hardness), glass transition temperature ( Tg), thermal stability, and oil resistance of these in situ ENR30/MWCNT nanocomposites were investigated and compared with NR and neat ENR30. The results showed that the scorch and cure times of ENR30/MWCNT nanocomposites were the longest followed by NR and ENR30. The incorporation of an appropriate amount of MWCNTs into the in situ epoxidation apparently improved the properties of NR. Among them, the nanocomposites filled with 2 phr MWCNTs exhibited the highest mechanical properties, Tg, thermal stability, and oil resistance. The mechanical properties of the in situ nanocomposites were also compared with those of the control nanocomposites prepared by adding MWCNTs directly in the prepared ENR30 latex. It was found that at similar MWCNT loadings, the in situ nanocomposites exhibited higher mechanical properties than the control nanocomposites.

Sodium-montmorillonite (Na-MMT) nanoclay was modified with different types of alkylamine organic modifier including primary and quaternary alkylamines. Influence types of alkylamine on properties of natural rubber/clay nanocomposites was investigated. It was found that organoclays caused improvement of mechanical properties of natural rubber, and accelerated vulcanization reaction with higher degree of crosslinking. In addition, organoclay modified with quaternary alkylamine showed significance cure reversion phenomenon which caused reduction of thermal stability. On the other hand, primary alkylamine modified nanoclay caused improvement of thermal stability of natural rubber. Moreover, stress relaxation was observed at the melting temperature of the modifying agent.
